Badu- Red Lored Amazon 18yrs old
Greetings all,

Just wanted to say hello! Over the weekend I rescued an 18 y/o female Red Lored Amazon from a pretty bad situation. For the past two years she was left outside in an aviary with other birds on a property in the woods in Southern Oregon. Prior to that someone else had "rescued" her, but I do not know any details really. My friend and I drove 14 hours that day there and back to get her out of that situation. The lady I got her from did not have a name for her, so on the way home we named her Badu after Erykah Badu. I had made an appointment with my avian vet prior to getting her, so she will get a full physical with blood work ASAP. I have no clue what she was eating besides sunflower seeds, so I got her Zupreem pellets. Those are the pellets my birds in the past have preferred and it seems like Badu enjoys those as well. I am implementing raw seeds, nuts, vegetables, and fruits into her diet as well. Badu is pretty scared of people getting too close to her which is understandable considering where she came from. She is warming up and gaining more confidence every day. Right now I just focus on spending all the time I can at home next to her, eating, working on my computer, socialising and talking to her. All while still respecting her space. The cage she is in is pretty large and does have a Dome Top with a clam shell (I guess is what its called?) I do have that secured with a lock after reading about the horror stories. It also has vertical and horizontal bars on it. She prefers climbing on the horizontal part of the cage and seems to struggle with the vertical sides, but I do believe that has something to do with her feet. I am actually looking at other cages for her at the moment that would be more suiting. She has multiple different perches with different textures and some are set up so she can use them to cross over to the other side. It is easier for her to travel throughout the cage like that and until she sees our vet I just want her to be as comfortable as possible. She has 3 hanging interactive parrot toys in there plus there are some more on the way. I also have a Chromebook that turns into a tablet set up outside her cage with toddler videos on YouTube playing throughout the day that she seems to really enjoy. She really loves Toddlers Learn Animals with Robi. It is so cute! If anyone has any advice I am all ears. If there's anything I can do at home in the mean time to make her life better and more comfortable please let me know! Attached are some photos of her and her set up right now. I can't wait to share her journey and progress with y'all.

Cheers
C & Badu

What a lovely girl. I’m glad she’s switched to eating pellets with so little fuss. She’s probably hungry!

I have rehomed a few birds from very bad situations and it seemed to me that I connected most with those birds. Patience is the important thing here, I think.

Yes, you're so right.
To lose patience is to lose the battle :)

A belated welcome to you and Badu!
Bless you for driving all that way to rescue her, what a wonderful gift for you both.

I have a Red-Lored who came from a situation a little like that, but he and his mate were in a barn. He still isn't tame at all, but he's come a long way since we got him 8 years ago.

I look forward to reading about your journey together.

I'm so happy you joined us!

Welcome to Parrot Forum!!

And, to the Wonderful World of Amazons, please take the time to read our Amazon Forum and with special attention to the two sticky Threads at the top of that Forum. Both of those Threads are filled with information that will help you understand and develop a loving relationship with your Amazon!

Please read the "Understanding Amazon Body Language as you girl already has a set in place and she will expect that you learn her body language and respect it.

Thank you for including a full spectrum diet for your Amazon. As part of the dry segment, consider adding grains as well as the full spectrum of seeds and nuts. There is great concern regarding Amazons eating Sunflower seed and peanuts as they add greatly to Fatty Liver Disease and Heart Issues. Your Avian Vet should include checking those to items as part of the wide-spectrum blood testing.

Bathing; consider misting above her allowing the mist to fall upon her it a gentle rain shower.

Over the upcoming year, you will see her overall coloration and feather quality improve vastly. That will be a sign of your great efforts reflected in her beauty coming-out!!

What a sweetheart Miz Badu is!
Bless you for rescuing her.

I have a great bond with my RLA that was loved but somewhat neglected by his previous owner for eight years.

I had another RLA that had a rough life for more than twenty years.
(after being well raised and trained for a dozen years by a young girl.)
She was so playful and loving, she'd let me trim her nails on a perch. She stole my heart but she had a medical issue and passed away and took my heart with her.

Congrats and welcome home Badu! From the pic, I see the cage is right next to the heater, which may not be ideal - that side of the cage is likely too hot for Badu to really hang out there much. Don't wanna roast parrot, right?

Those 2 threads 'Boats mentioned - INVALUABLE information in there.

I started adding grains and I would like to say I am thankful she isn't a picky eater....yet. She really liked the oatmeal. I will be making her some quinoa next.
Also, she seemed to love the mist shower with the spray bottle! Great idea.
I shall keep everyone posted on her progress and continue to read and research in the Amazon forums.
Thanks again!

Okay I was kinda wondering about it which is why I included it in the photo! Guess its not thanksgiving yet. lol jk.
I did move it further away, but still in the room so she doesn't get cold. These windows are thin and old so the central heater doesn't really serve a huge purpose on really cold days!
