That Scent

A while back I asked why do Amazons emit a particular scent through their nares. There doesn't seem to be an answer so now I am wondering when do you notice it?

I notice it whenever I take the bird out of his cage. So I am assuming he is telling me he is happy.

Well, I actually hear and smell him doing it while taking him out of the cage.

I know what scent you're talking about. I don't have that scent in my house. There's No way am I getting my face near the leader of the dark underworld to find out if he emits it or not. I'm pretty sure if I did get close enough, it would smell the same as a fire breathing dragon would.

Right now he smells like Italian stuffed shells. I haven't checked, but the fact that it's all over his face is a good indication.

I'm gonna stick to huffing macaw for now. That one won't make me look like I'm ready for Halloween a month and a half too soon!

Yep, both my zonz have this scent, but I think I can detect the slight difference ..... DYH's is more fruity when YSA's is more musky.....

I wonder what a Panama amazons smells like. I remember that Pionus can smell like baby powder (I snorted one once). I don't remember any kind of order from my mini macaws nor my Eclectus. I remember the larger macaws having a sent. I never have been close enough to an Amazon to snort it.

I have no idea if Valentino my RFM emits any sent. I don't have a sense of smell anymore and with how often I am shoving my face in his feathers if I could still smell I would know.

Kind of depressing I won't know what a Panama amazon will smell like. My baby will come home and I won't be able to snort him proper.

Most parrot oil glands for preening are around their bottom. Amazons emit from their nares. and it is very distinctive.

Exactly. I am not talking a body odor type of thing. It comes from its nose and you can tell like it is breathing a bit harder when it is happening. At first I thought it was hissing at me but he was not showing fear. When I first read about an odor from other members, I thought it was from the feathers too until I sat in front of his cage one day and started talking to him. Oh, it was near his food cup too. Lol. He came to me, started breathing harder and this unusual scent came from nowhere. That was when I realized what people were talking about.

This next question is probably to be answered by breeders. Does this occur between two birds during mating season? If so, then that means the birds do have the ability to smell and this could be considered as pheromones. That makes sense doesn't it?

Both Hunter and Sam emit the heavenly scent when I take them out, when I talk to them, play with them...just about each and every time they get excited. I love snorting Amazons.

Bacci my Lilac Crowned Amazon has his own little smell, and I have grown to love it. I am definitely a Parrot Huffer.

When I'm close to him and he's talking to me, he exudes his essence. I actually enjoy his 'perfume'. Does that make me seem 'off'? LOL!

I'm going to call his first trademarked fragrance, Perfume de Harlique. Think it'll sell?

I was sitting in front of Judy's cage this morning while he was waiting for his breakfast. He was talking and emitting the special scent as I was filling up his cup. I also noticed his eyes were dilating. No fanning of the tail. lol. Watching the eyes change within seconds never ceases to amaze me.

When I was in my early 20's, I went to check out The Bird Store in Sacramento just to see what it was all about. I was amazed to see the variety of birds available for sale. When I saw my first amazon, I was immediately drawn to the eyes. Yep, I have been hypnotized.
