Parrots
None, temporarily
Last week, I introduced my new feathered friend, my CGCC temporarily known as Little Parrot. One of his favorite things to do is climbing into my shirt sleeve. He will stay in there for as long as half an hour.

Uh oh, sounds like you've got a Stage 5 snuggle-bug on your hands. Or up your sleeve!! ;)

Sometimes he is a cuddle bug and sometimes he's a cuddle bug that bites. Usually he does just want to snuggle in my sleeve, but sometimes he has a different motive-- his sole purpose in climbing into my sleeve is to chomp on my fingers. He thinks that biting is fun and we're working on changing his thinking. I'm demonstrating that there are other things more fun to do and things that are better to chomp on than human flesh. Sooner or later he'll get the idea.

Little Parrot is definitely different from any other parrot I've lived with. :D

We were supposed to have his first vet visit today, but the only vet at the practice who takes care of parrots is sick, so the appointment was cancelled. The receptionist will call me when they set a new appointment, probably early next week.

So that left us with lots of time to play and explore today. He spent at least an hour altogether up my sleeve, coming out now and then to stretch his wings and legs. Not much biting today. This evening he wanted to explore and he climbed onto my shoulder and we walked around the apartment. We had to stop along the way so he could inspect things that captured his attention.

Sometimes over the years I've offered suggestions to Forum members looking for advice about introducing new foods to parrots. And now I have to follow my own advice, including preparing vegetables in different ways. Cooked carrots were a no-go, as were big pieces of raw carrot. Tonight I cut raw carrot into little matchstick strips and they were a success. I have some different pellets for him to try and I've been softening some for him and he eats almost all that I give him. He likes cooked pasta and quinoa too. Progress!

No progress with a name yet. I've tried both masculine and feminine names, from Albert to Zachary and from Abigail to Zelda and he hasn't reacted to any of them. I've tried some non-human names too and he's been no more enthusiastic about those. I guess I might end up just picking a name that I like and sticking with it.
