Yesterday I discovered that my Hubby had accidentally thrown out a whole box of toys I had. So today I made Ruby a new toy with pine cones from my yard, I baked them in oven at 250 degrees for 30 minutes to kill any mold or bugs. I also used sunflower heads with the seeds removed from a neighbors sunflower harvest recently. She has already demolished the sunflower heads and is busily working the pine cones over.

Now to go make Kylie one before Ruby needs hers replenished with new cones.

oh love it ive been seeing a lot of the pinecones before i didnt know they were safe for birds ill definitely have to start using them!

WOW nice toy good job

This toy is already destroyed !!! I gotta make them faster, I guess. I can certainly see how pine cones would distract a plucker. Ruby worked diligently until it was all chewed to pieces. Kylie is working on hers now, and I don't expect it to last any longer than Ruby's did.

I'm sending the boys out to gather more cones !

Merlee, I will make you some ! I better make a lot of them though, as they don't last long.

There are a lot of pine trees where I live so I will collect some for you. Looking at the pictures, you prefer them unopened? Does it make a difference?

Pinecones have sharp edges, how come their tongues don't get cut?

Heather, why don't you start making toys and sell them at the bird fairs in Atlanta? Next one is in two weeks. lol.

Merlee with the way Ruby destroys toys, she will put me out of business quickly- LOL !
unopened cones is what I found closest to the edge of the woods this morning. Without my boys to make tons of noise, I was scared I would find a rattlesnake along with the cones. We have already killed 3 rattlers on our property this summer. I believe fully opened cones would be much easier to tie to the hemp rope I have on hand. When the Hubby gets home, I am going to try using his drill and stringing the unopened cones.

Ruby and Kylie seemed to have no problem with the sharp edges, they just demolished the cones. I am thankful to have found such a fun toy part for them, especially as it is FREE !

Maybe I could take my boys into slavery and force them to make these toys and sell them. I would def have to have help to make enough to sell, or else I would never get my house work done and school taught

That is awesome! I really must gather some 'natural' materials to make some toys!:)

Very nice toys you've made!!! We've been talking about making our own toys for the birds for a very long time but we never got around to it and kept buying them at the bird fair when we see them....lol.....We're always so busy with things around the house, work, and family plus all the animals. Perhaps one day.... :54:

Mikey, I get in a creative mood a few times a year and will make a whole heap of toys. I made several more last night and will post photos in a bit. Ruby certainly is greatfull for my creative bursts ! The Hubby comes home tonight, so I have an idea for a refillable pine cone toy, so he has some weekend work to do.

My creative mood have been spent earlier this year doing landscape and building a shed then paint the whole thing. Then several other things....There's always next year....lol
