Transport Cage

I need to get a transport cage for my green cheek conure to use for trips to the vet. Does anyone have any suggestions as to which one is best? Thanks in advance!

For an occasional trip to the vet a small cat carrier will work fine and is inexpensive.

I have a collapsible prevu hendrix cage that works well for car rides (DK if it's big enough for a sleep cage in terms of your bird's size, but it is too small for my cockatoo to use as a daytime/sleep cage at the destination---I tried to upgrade to one that I thought would be "better" but my bird hates it.I have to use a separate cage to house her when we travel overnight, but you might not need to.


Also, I just thought of this...never occurred to me before, but figured I would mention it...Pet carriers are pretty dark, so while they do work, I suppose there is the risk that they could cause hormonal issues..depends on how sensitive your bird is, but for some, even a few minutes in a "cave" can cause issues...

For a conure, I'd just get a very small 'finch' type cage with a single perch placed low. I've always found when in the car, my bird likes having something to hold with his foot (like the bars on the side of the cage). They also should be able to see out a window IMO, so they aren't feeling the sensation of movement with no visual frame of reference. We have a much fancier backpack carrier for our bird now since he likes going out other than just the vet but I actually had to rig up a foot hold for him in it because he had difficulties balancing when taking turns, braking etc... I cannot imagine a cat crate with a perch like many opt to use being a very comfortable ride and would imagine it probably quite terrifying for a bird. Go with a nice, simple little cage (and be sure to buckle your baby in!).

I have a variety of carriers for my birds. Like Bill suggests above, for short trips - a cat carrier works just fine and is very practical. My vet is 2 hours away, so I like to be able to put food and water in for them as it’s a full day excursion. I have a small Pak-o-Bird which works really well. I also have 2 small aluminum carriers from Kings Cages - which I really like (I separately bought small plastic bowls which hook onto the cage). I have a clear acrylic carrier which is okay, but I’m not as fond of - the perch in it is slippery and I had to replace it with rope. I have a small preview Hendrix carrier which is also okay. A side note - 2 of my conures get car sick and need to be covered when traveling in the car to alleviate it, the others are okay.

I found a fold up cage for my Golden Conure on Amazon and I found a clear carrier as well. The cage folds to about three inches and then when unfolded it's dimensions are 17" tall and 20" high with a perch and two stainless steel bowls

There are obviously all kinds of different carriers you can use to take your Green Cheek in, whether you buy a cat or dog carrier (the plastic kind with a cage door, or better yet are the fabric kind that you can fold-up, available at any Walmart, any Big Lots, or any pet store obviously, I found a really nice Coleman brand fabric Dog carrier at Big Lots just by chance, size medium, and it's perfect for my birds, and much nicer than the plastic carriers because they don't slide all over the place)...Or you can simply go to any pet shop and buy either a small bird cage, like for Finches is great because they are small and square/rectangular and collapse easily, or you can actually buy a special carrier meant for birds, but they are going to be much more expensive, usually into the hundreds of dollars. Just depends on what you want to spend...If you want to get a really nice, expensive parrot carrier with a built-in perch and bowl holder, then you can buy a Pak-o-Bird online, but again, you're looking at least at a couple hundred dollars for a new one, or a used one on Amazon or eBay for between $100-$200.

I, also, have struggled a bit on deciding which travel carrier is best for my GCC. I have a similar one like the Kings Cage mentioned above, but it is pretty heavy and cumbersome to move around.
I recently purchased the soft sided one that has a front and rear mesh window with a perch. Very light and secure. I only use this one for very short trips. My GCC goes in/out with no problem but am not convinced he's comfortable since it only has a perch for him to sit on and in a moving car, this can be tricky.
A small cage, I believe is better, since they can move around and hang onto to the bars making them more secure.
