Travel Cage

I'm having a hell of a time finding a travel cage for my GCC.
The one he has now is a Petco brand travel cage made for rodents and it is way too small now that he has grown up from when I got him.
I cant spend more than $50 on a travel cage. I want a travel cage that is an actual cage, not a plastic box :/

This is all I've been able to find.

It has 3/4in bar spacing, which I don't trust, because Peeko is on the smaller side for a GCC.

Can anyone help?

That's the exact same cage as the listing... Do they not make any with 1/2in spacing? Peeko would get out of anything wider than 1/2in...

I have my Senegal in mine, she sleeps in it and I use it to transport her. I'm not sure of the bar spacing.

Senegals are significantly bigger than GCCs from what I'm reading. Around double the weight. And Peeko is on the small end for a GCC

Charlie is a very very slender senegal. He has no issues with the bar spacing. Merlin has no issue either but he is chunkier.

Have you tried Peeko in cages of that bar spacing?

Hoping some GCC owners can chime in! Or those with cockatiels, what spacing do you use?

I haven't tried, no. But I've read GCC owners warning about escapees from 3/4in bar spacing, so its kept me far, far away from cages with 3/4in spacing.

I use a cat carrier; The one I got at petsmart has a metal mesh top so Porter can see out of it and it gives him space for several toys and other things.

I prefer a harder, shorter cage simply because in the long run it is easier to use, and clean.

As a travel 'cage' for out time I have a soft sided fold down dog 'play pen'.

Porter loves his carrier so much he sleeps in it, but as for the front door where the bars are too widely spaced I wrapped and wove bird safe fabric through it and turned the whole section into a toy for him as well.

I have two perches in there and a variety of toys at any given time.

I wouldn't use it while I wasn't there but.. when travelling its no hassle right? Another idea is this cage...

I use it as Porter's usual cage but he's a little bit smaller than a GCC; and he HATES large cages; its 18x18x30 L (1/2" bar spacing) and it folds down to a size that would fit in any suitcase. Easy to put together..easy enough to clean and it even has handles on the side for easy transport. I'd break it down though and transport your bird in something a little more sturdy :3

What it basicially boils down too is I have a smaller carrier for overnight trips and for longer trips I either just bring his cage with me, or use the fold out pen. Tabletop perches and other things work really well inside of it; despite not being able to place perches like one ordinarily would. He stays in his carrier when I'm on vacation or out with me on his harness. (I use a feather tether because it is the only kind he'll readily accept.) Otherwise when its tv time or quiet time on vacation he's in the playpen on a table or the floor happily playing away.

Thanks so much, I'm looking into the cat carrier. I can probably zip tie wire mesh over the door and it wont be an issue!

This is why he needs a new one. I think its undeniable that he's outgrown this pitiful little thing! He was so small when I got him that it was fine... Not anymore.

That one is the EXACT one I have for Porter and much cheaper than the petco version.

I use a cat carrier for my budgies as well but as they are a little more flighty its just an ordinary one from walmart.

The slightly birds (GCC, Brotos, Linnies, and otherwise.) I've found NEED to see out, daffy and blue are happy either way.

Now that I ordered the $50 version of the mesh kennel instead of the cheaper version due to the photos showing smaller spaced mesh on the door of the $50 version... I've found out that they're exactly the same brand and model name. Petmate's website shows the kennel both with the big door mesh like your's, and the small door mesh like the $50 version's picture shows.

I'm going to be seriously upset if I paid $30 extra for smaller mesh that was only a mistakenly used stock photo, and it turns out to be the one with the big square holes in the door.

I for one don't trust those carriers, plastic boxing is basically like putting a bug under a magnifying glass. Rather have a pure barred cage, so there's brilliant airflow and nothing 'attracting' the suns rays per say.

I've had bad experiences with bar caging in accidents.


I've found when travelling for the bird's safety its better to have something a little lower in case they loose their balance; with a towel beneath them and a towel over the top of half the cage.

With any cage you need to keep your birds out of the sun as well; as putting a bird in a car is much the same as you are describing.

I also find carriers easier to strap in, heh.
