GCC- Ollie 3.9.13.
Cockatiels- RIP Charlie 2012, Zac 2006.
So my daughter got Ollie out of his cage yesterday to discover his foot covered in blood. On closer inspection I could see it was bleeding from where the nail attaches so off to the avian vet we went. She said the nail was still attached 3/4 of the way around so it should heal. He had a Vitamin K injection to stop further bleeding and he has pain relief drops for 3 days as well as calcium supplements for 7 days (the vet said that conures metabolise calcium differently and it helps them with clotting?!?)
Glad we could get into the vet on the same day! Poor little boy. She said we need to keep him as still as possible and limit walking!
Seriously!!!
That's like telling a 2 year old to sit on a chair all day!
I gave him a millet spray today which kept him still for a long period!!!

Oh geeze.....I'm glad everything went ok though....but seriously? Keeping the bird still? Well, a few of mine I don't have problem keeping them still, but the rest of them, forget it....The worst one is Malachai, he's like a kid on sugar high, he's NEVER still....

Calace, which vet do you go to? None of our local ones is particularly cluey when it comes to birds, although they're fine in a pinch. I'd just like to find a vet who specialises, y'know?

Mikey- You're right, it's virtually impossible, but I'm just trying to keep him calm and do "quiet" activities with him... which eventually leads to him being all... Oh well, at least his foot hasn't started up bleeding again since yesterday!

Trish, we go to Sugarloaf Animal Hospital at West Wallsend. As far as I know Mark Simpson (who owns the practice) is the only accredited avian vet in Newcastle, although there is also one at Cessnock (Megan Jolly). We heard about Mark when we got our first tiel and have always been very happy with the service/treatment. I didn't actually see Mark yesterday but all the vets who work there are very knowledgable about birds. You can tell it's an avian vet practice as soon as you walk in the doors! There are WAY more bird toys and food than for cats and dogs! (Very rare in my experience) Also when I arrived yesterday the only other patients in the waiting room were 3 chickens!
Here's their website: Sugarloaf Animal Hospital, West Wallsend - Newcastle

Gee, thanks for that! I was told the vets at Sugarloaf weren't especially wonderful with birds, but that they 'happened' to get a lot of avian traffic 'just because'. I'm so glad to have someone finally recommend a vet as the ones in our immediate area are fine for dogs'n'cats, but not so fine for birds. I'd like a fair-dinkum avian vet to have a look at our Dominic, so I might get in touch with them next week. :)

Glad to hear he is doing fine :D Did the vet say how it happened?

She said it just looked like he'd got it snagged on a toy or something. I'm wondering if maybe it was the rope perch? I'm really careful with his toys so there's not much else he could have gotten caught on! Anyway, he's back to normal and going through his feisty 'testing out my new flock' stage!

Just make sure that you keep his nails the proper length as a nail that curves a bit too much is more likely to snag on just about anything.
