Goji: yellow-sided GCC
I adopted my GCC about two weeks ago and he was weaned on a 1:1 ratio of Tropican and Tropimix. My avian vet recommended me to abandon Tropimix from his diet (gradually, of course) and only use Tropican as his pellets. However, he only eats the brown granules and most of the green ones are basically thrown out which is a waste imo. Should I switch his pellets to Roudybush or mix the two brands together? I've heard good things about both brands but Tropican is the more readily available where I live, whereas Roudybush is only carried by one retailer I found. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I prefer Tropican to Roudybush, personally. I also feed Tropimix as well. I find Tropimix to be a wonderful blend in addition to the Tropican and fresh veggies and fruits. IS there a specific reason why your vet recommended you stop with the Tropimix?

He said it's because the fruits in Tropimix are very high in sugar and the bird may pick those out which my conure does tend to do. What size Tropican do you feed your birds? I'm wondering if a smaller size might help with the waste problem.

As with most pellets, the color is meaningless. So, you have a Parrot that is making a choice regarding color. Odder things can and do happen. I would recommend that if you have yard visitors, Turkey, etc... try providing the rejected color pellet to them.

As stated, providing fresh foods is highly recommended!

My birds are not really fans of the dried fruits, so no problems for my guys there. We feed Cockatiel sized Tropican to the conures.

Thanks both for the replies. I guess I'll stick with Tropican for now- no sense switching it except maybe to the cockatiel size.

What size are you using now? My big birds get parrot size granules, and my conures will pick at it, but are not really fans of that size.

I wanted to switch from Roudybush to Tropican for the exact same reasons you mention. Availability. But my bird grew up on Roudybush and seems to prefer it to everything else we've tried. Sucks, but what can you do lol

@Terry57 he's on the small parrot granules ATM and doesn't seem to mind the size since he likes holding food with his feet. But every time he takes a bite, at least 80% falls out of his mouth LOL. I may try a smaller size and see which he prefers.

@Mookie where do you get your Roudybush? I've only found one retailer in Toronto and shipping is so expensive if I try to order online :/

Have you tried Dr. Foster and Smith? not sure if they deliver to canada, but they have really good prices on Roudybush, which is what I feed my GCC. Good luck whatever you do!

@tkymichelle in Edmonton there is a fantastic shop called Meika's that has Roudybush. But Tropican is everywhere. Even WalMart lol I'll do some searches. See what I can find in T.O.

Parrot Place looks like they have it. Online ordering but in Acton so it shouldnt be too much...

Also there's a place in Sauga' called Paradise Perch. Another spot in High Park.
