Unexpected new addition

Hi folks, long time no see!

I came to share this little fella. My mother called me screaming on Sunday morning, telling me she needed me outside immediately. This little baby was in our yard, magically not having been found by our dogs. We spent the next fifteen minutes trying to bully it into a large storage bin.

I’m going to be honest and say that I will not be looking for the original owner. This baby is so young its eyes haven’t changed, and there was another nearly identical baby found across the main road the day before. The wings have been absolutely butchered and cut up about as far as the feathers can be cut. I don’t have a good feeling about any of that.

This baby will be staying with us and we have dubbed them Broccoli Cheddar, or Brock. Does Brock appear to be a Brockette to you? It’s been a few years since I’ve had a budgie so I can’t really decide.

Well I don't know if you have a young hen or rooster, but it would appear Broccoli Cheddar picked the right back yard to land in! Congrats on your unexpected new baby, @Vilatus, s/he's one lucky little cutie!

Young Brock is a beautiful girl, and she isn't quite a baby. Her cere is light tan, which means she's mature, and her forehead rught above her cere is clear yellow. If Brock was under 6 months old her lower forehead would be striped.
The eyes don't develop white iris rings until the bird is about 9 months old, and some mutations and combinations of mutations never do. Your girl is pied. I have a six year old pied male budgie that still has his big black baby eyes!

Can Brock fly? If not, I wonder how she got there? Who would let flightless budgies go outdoors where they are easy targets for predators? Usually budgies found outdoors are full flighted escapees, not severely wing clipped.
I hope you enjoy your new friend. Please get her a friend. A lone budgie is usually a sad budgie.

This is so precious! What a lucky one to have landed in your yard, and even luckier to have avoided the dogs! My budgie Bonnie was rescued from our backyard too and was in pretty bad shape when we found her. Wings clipped incorrectly, overgrown beak, nails way too long, would hiss at me whenever I got too close to her cage. Now, two years later, she's happy, healthy, and flies to my shoulder each time her cage door is open. It's amazing how resilient they can be with some love and care.

Thank you for giving this little one a safe and loving home. I love the name Broccoli Cheddar, lol. It's adorable and totally budgie-appropriate

If ypu don't want to or cant get another budgie, female budgies don't need a companion as much as males do. I have 20 budgies, 10 females and 10 males. The males are very sociable but the females largely ignore each other and only pay attention to the males when they want to breed (I discourage breeding). Females do need a nice big cage, out of cage time,and LOTS of toys they can chew and destroy.
Some say males make "better" pets but I now officially disagree. I used to believe that myself but I have two girl budgies that are very friendly and tame. The ONLY thing males do better (in general) is talk. The boys chatter all day long to each other and to inanimate objects, making a wide range of sounds. The girls simply aren't as chatty.

I should clarify- baby to me lol! I know she’s probably not as young as I initially thought.
Omg that’s sweet, I’ve never had a pied before so I haven’t seen the eyes. My late budgie was an albino and had pretty pale blue irises around his red pupils.

Brock cannot fly. All the wing feathers have been chopped- and her tail feathers are gone which I assume happened while outside. That is my exact reasoning for keeping her. I have this horrible gut feeling someone just got tired of the noise (as much as budgies can make…) and threw her out. I’ve had many people tell me how they really feel about budgies because they’re so cheap so.

I will consider a friend but I’m not sure if my family will allow it… She will have my Quaker to chat with if not play with in the meantime! After quarantine of course.

I would LOVE another but my partner and I are living with my parents currently and I’m not sure that will go over too well.

Don’t worry though, I am very familiar with their needs! I had a “male” before! Female but didn’t find out before the name Stanley stuck lol. Absolutely the best parrot I’ve ever had, so sweet and loving. His cage was big enough that I actually have my Quaker in it now! I lost him to cancer a few years back.

Lol, everyone keeps saying this to me! I’m just glad I could save her. Awww, they just all need a good home and some love to blossom like that. Budgies really are the best.

I couldn’t say no We couldn’t come up with a name initially and I’m like… oh they kinda look like broccoli cheddar bake lmao!

She’ll be allowed out a bunch too- my birds get out at least a few hours a day. She’s got a big flight cage on order that should be here in a few days, as well as a bunch of toys. I think we’re going to move some furniture and make a bird room so that they can just be next to each other. With enough space to make sure no toes get eaten obviously lol, and of course after quarantine.

Awww, it’s nice to hear of someone else rescuing a lil budgie like that I imagine she’s very happy and loved with you and your flock!

I actually had a similar thing happen to me a year or so ago- a now ex friend called me and her grandmother was tired of the three budgies she had so she was just going to let them loose. I drove like three hours total to get these guys away from her and to a rescue. Just horrible.
