Blue fronted amazon - Ebbe
Hi everyone!
During the fall I wrote about the blue fronted amazon called Ebbe that I rescued.
As some of my might recall, he was very afraid of hands and not really handled the last five years or so.

I won't lie - it's been hard. He's been very hormonal and at some times I felt like giving up. However, we got through spring and even though some days are tough, it's so worth it.
We became members in a local parrot club and made lot of new friends and has gotten very helpful tips.

He's been so fun to be around and makes me laugh every day. We have also done a lot of progress:
  • He can do some tricks
  • He's started to talk (a lot)
  • He's not really afraid of my hands and he allows me to scratch him
  • And most importantly - he's learned how to play!

We've worked on his fears (sticks and fabric) and he's now a lot more self confident.
I love this frikkin bird so much.

We also started to harness train. It went well at first but I overstep my boundaries and he's now very suspicious of his harness. I'm aware that it might be possible he's not a harness-accepting parrot but it would enrich our lives so much. Anyone who's got any tips on how to proceed with an adult parrot?

The best thing about all this is not really the cuddles or the tricks, it's how happy he's become. His happiness is so honest and it makes me laugh even if I'm having a bad day :)

AWESOME! also I have been wondering about you and him, last I remember the former owner showed up and the bird was like "DO NOT WANT"!

I'm so happy the bird is still with you! I was hoping it would turn out that way.

There is nothing like a bird that loves you, and accepts your love.

so what tricks?

what words? Swedish or English I'm sure Swedish but curious.

Oh and clark says hi. :gcc:

I too was wondering about Ebbe! You came so far in just a few months that's awesome!
And the picture of Ebbe checking out your nose is a BF's way of saying "I love you!"
Amy will nibble my nose while we are driving around in the car (which is her most fav thing to do)

I'm with Clark here...what tricks and what has Ebbe learned to say?

Thanks so much for the update Florem!!

Oh, I forgot!!!
HE'S MINE! I got her to sign the papers in late december after I fought her a bit!

He can wave with both of his feet and "shake". He can put things in bowls and we're training on sorting colors.
He can also turn around (both ways), let me touch his beak (did this as a kind of contact training at first), give me kisses, recall training and fly back to his cage :)

He speaks swedish :)
His favourite word is his name "Ebbe" and to use that in different ways. Like "Hi Ebbe, Hello Ebbe, Good day Ebbe" or just "Ebebebebeb"
He can also do different noises from his very first home, like crying like a baby which he does when he's unhappy with something and two days ago when I was busy and didn't give him enough attention he started screaming "MOOM, MOOOOM!" That was a suprise!
I've noticed that he's practicing making different noises and words by himself which is the cutest thing ever :D

He's learned to love peek-a-boo and everytime he can see me again he says "woooo" with his excited voice

the sweetness!

Happy to hear that both of you are doing so well with and continue to grow your relationship!

Congratulations!

Thanks for the awesome update for you and Ebbe!

The Instagram video row 8, center is outstanding!

Very glad you decided to fight for Ebbe! In doing so, you have undoubtedly gained a friend for life:) I am glad to hear you made it through his hormonal time of year and are making progress with earning his trust.

It took 2 years to harness train our rescue BFA (and that was after having him for 7 years!), so patience and persistence is the best advice I can give. Have you considered a bird backpack for him? Pak-o-bird is available in the US and I even think some of our UK members have them. Not sure if they ship to Sweden, but may be worth finding out. MUCH easier and safer than a harness IMO. Our backpack is still our preferred mode of transport even after harness training. https://www.celltei.com/birds-parrots.html

Oh, I would LOVE to hear more about your training!

I've been thinking of a backpack. I have a transportation cage at the moment to bring him outside for sun but he gets restless after a while.

I'm so happy to hear this update, and that Ebbe is STAYING with you :). It sounds like he is doing so well in your care. I'm also considering a backpack for my birds, since they are being quite stubborn about wanting nothing to do with harnesses. I think I'd feel more secure with the backpack anyway and it's much easier to keep moving around than if I was carrying a cage.

I'm so happy you got to keep him! And it sounds like he is thriving with you as his parront! Lucky Ebbe!

Oooh, Ebbe! <3 <3 I didn't read the original thread, but I'm a big Ebbe fan from elsewhere. I met him (and you of course!) in January, I was the one in the green parrot print dress and the crazy young blue front Drogon, lol.
Me and my friend agreed that Ebbe was the cutest amazon ever. ...Possibly except for Drogon, of course, but that's just because I HAVE to say that.. ;) Haha no but really, I keep going back to my photos from that meet-up and I die every time I see Ebbe and his adorable gigantic bug eyes, I love him!
I'm glad things are going well :')

This makes me so happy! Thank you for seeing past the fear in Ebbe and taking the dive. Love the update please keep them coming.

Ooooh, I'm so happy that you are here aswell!
I loved Drogon and it was so good for Ebbe to se someone interact with their parrot like you did. He was fascinated!

Tldr; I picked up Ebbe from a house belonging to a woman with a drug addiction while she was in jail. He had been all alone for five days without any fresh food or water, just old seeds and a rotten melon (and some old water) and was super scared of hands and would never sit on anyones shoulder. He's made an amazing recovery and is my little treasure :)

I nominate Florem for best adopter of 2018. also if i remember right the bird wasn't even that well socialized....you've done all the training yourself. And it's a large bird!

Hahaha this makes me SO happy! All these beautiful comments really touches me :smile015: :smile015: :smile015:

And no, he wasn't really socialized but I think I've had the advantage of him being in a pretty good home as a baby until they rehomed him.
His progress has really amazed me. The first time he invited me to scratch his head was such a big thing :)

He's gotten veeery cuddly! He loves to preen my eyebrows or eyelashes which is not my favourite thing to get preened but I appreciate his effort :D

Harness training can take a long time, because you never want to push the parrot too hard. It took about a year for Salty to accept the harness. I include putting his head thru the head loop in our nightly training sessions. Actually putting the harness on is a whole 'nother action. Salty and I play and rough house all the time, So he accepts more handling then some parrots do. Check out our video on Youtube, How NOT to put a harness on ( but we take a breather and get it on correctly).
