Update on Tequila

I have a few suggestions.

First, hand feeding. You can use a regular small spoon or bend one if you can, but bending isn't required. I've found much better results with plastic spoons as they feel more like a beak.

What to feed- weight loss is a serious concern if she has not been eating. Choose things like sweet potato or other above-mentioned foods from other posts. Add some filtered water or plain pedialyte (you can make your own very easily!) and heat it to 104-106 degrees farenheit. Mash it up until it forms a porridge or thick pudding consistency. Some small bits of food are okay if you're using the spoon method. Add a scoop of bird formula to increase nutrients as well.

Second- take her to the vet and bring lots of her favorite snacks and goodies. Not for an appointment, just to have good associations with the facility. They may even let you take her in the back where she is kept in an incubator and in one of the exam rooms. Even sitting in the waiting room and socializing with the staff is a huge help. Our fids get very confused and stressed when in a foreign environment with strange people. Of course we can't tell them we are coming back for them, so anything we can do to ease their concern will only help in the future.

Given her disease and the fact she may visit the vet more often than most, this approach should surely be beneficial for her health long term.

She looks beautiful and I'm so happy to see she is eating. Even feeding her from your hand may encourage her appetite. Up her intake of carbs and anything to give her energy. Plenty of new and flavorful items (especially what you're eating!) will entice her to have a greater intake of food. If you don't already, allow her to sit on a perch on the table while you eat. You take a bite, you give her a bite- not from your fork or the side from which you've been eating so as not to introduce cross-contamination of gram negative bacteria.

Lovely to see Tequila getting better...gorgeous pics...did my heart good to see them and see her eating...so sorry to hear about the bone disease ...please God she will come on in leaps and bounds now ...I aggree with many visits to the vets waiting room so she gets to know the place from a more comfortable and less stressed perspective andof course lots of treats when she goes there...I really am so glad to see a pic of that lovely girl eating ...so nice to see...so happy for you and Tequila ...Get well soon Tequila and stay well :)

I'm so happy for you to see this update! I figured that making her mentally happy by seeing you and the familiar environment would make a world of difference. Looking for continued positive updates!

Thank you sooooo much to everyone and their advice!!!

At the moment shes been eating on her own fine which is brilliant!!! But if she doesnt eat enough ill do the spoon feeding. I did do a little spoon feeding last night.

I honestly dont know how she was hand fed as a baby:( im her third owner. I got her off a guy that didnt seem to know much about her. He calles her Princess. She didnt have a bond with him and she was SO quiet when I originally got her. She didnt like me when I first took her home. It took a while for her to warm up to me

She isnt eating her normal chop, so I've been giving her other foods. I warmed up sweet potatoe and some pasta for her this morning. She picked at ate some of that. Ive given her some pellets ans nuts and shes eating that right now which is great.

At the moment shes acting like she normally does. Its like shes done a 360! Shes making her little noises, her siren noise lol. Shes flapping like a mad man as usual, she moves around her cage etc. Im so happy i brought her home guys.

Parrot People are the best. I love *US*!

I'm so happy to see this latest update!!! Gorgeous photo of Tequila! Have a wonderful weekend, I'm thrilled you brought her home.

Great job adjusting her foods to fit her current tastes. At times like these, the most important thing is getting some food into her.

Let me ask, what is her weight? Is it much lower than usual?

Shes usually at 395grams. Shes currently at 385 grams.

Okay. Considering all that she's been through, it could be a lot worse than a 10 gram drop. You've done a great job keeping her weight up!

Exactly that's what's i thought. She's still going good this morning.

Great to hear that Tequila is doing so well...you have done a wonderful job of keeping her weight up and taking care of her every need

Shes lost 5 more grams this morning. I think ill be syringe feeding her. Do i just use hand rearing food??

I just bought some hand rearing mix. I have a bent spoon at home. Ill try with the spoon and if not ill syringe through her mouth. She just isnt eating enough. Shes still acting like her normal self.

I don't think a 10 gram drop for a bird her weight means anything. It can vary more than that from day to day normally, and also depends on the time of day. Still if you know she's not ingesting enough, then you have to do you what you have to. Best wishes for continued improvement.

Im not extemely worried, but i dont think feeding her abit wouldnt hurt as she lost 15grams all up atm.

You can try handfeeding her with warmed mash of your own making. Anything roughly close to that consistency could help. But keep the other foods available as well.

Are Tequila's meds known appetite suppressants?

Giving her baby food, the parrot kind ,couldn't hurt, it has lots of good stuff in it (of course). I used to use the end of a spoon to give Salty his, when weaning him, or a syringe, if she take it from that. Warm, 105degF. The hump seems to be over for Tequila. Glad for you and her.

I did try feeding her a mash and she only ate a bit of it. I'm not sure if her medications are appetite suppressants, but I'll ask the vet today. I didn't actually have to hand feed her last night which was great. Her weight hasn't gone any lower than yesterday morning.
I do have hand rearing parrot food just in case. I'm ringing the vet today to give him an update.
