Parrots
2 green cheeked conures and 1 black capped
hey all.
so, long story short- at around 3am wednesday night ( it’s friday night right now as i write this ), i was awoken to smoke alarms and thick smoke, because my father stupidly fell asleep while making split pea soup. the smoke was lingering for i want to say about 20 mins, HOPEFULLY less, it’s impossible to say…but we aired the smoke out as soon as possible. however, the smell is still very pungent to the point where i’ve been told i smell like cigarette smoke and my stuff smells bad. the birds ( three conures and my mother’s quaker parrot ) are acting fine; eating, drinking, no apparent tail-bobbing, etc, but i am aware that birds hide sickness and pain.

right now where i live, it’s very cold out ( a high of 37 degrees ), so opening windows for long isn’t really an option. the smell is slowly moving out, but it’s still stuck to things, but it was so bad i was able to taste a metallic, smokey taste for about a day after, and stuff upstairs smells like it, including my stuffed animals.

i PROMISE you guys, this is as much as a shock to me as it is to you, as this never happens. words cannot describe how terrified and angry i am at this situation. nothing has been the same mentally for me ever since this happened. i could not get a hold of any nearby vets because, of course, they were closed wednesday, and those that were open were not answering phones, so i left messages. however, this morning i finally got a hold of two vets that have told me to either bring them in anyway, despite how their acting, to check on them, OR to house them somewhere / move them upstairs more until the smell goes away ( which would be hard because upstairs in my house is colder than downstairs ).

will my sweet babies be okay?? do i need to worry about them dropping dead soon? should i take them in?
i’m so so sad and worried about them, i cannot describe what im feeling. any answers would be IMMENSELY appreciated.

thank you to whoever reads this and responds.

EDIT - just to add more detail, all the birds are in the living room near the kitchen, since our house is not the biggest…which was sadly near most of the smoke. i’m not sure if the smell of the burnt pan and burnt peas is enough to get them sick, but the pan itself is not made of teflon.

They are fine.

Birds are dinosaurs So long as there were no toxins in the pan materials (PFA, PTFE and others) they will be ok. Also not in the same room by your account. If the birds are acting fine, then they are fine. For sure get them a checkup with an AVN,. The most important thing you can do for them is calm down.

thank you so much for replying.
they are all in the living room, which was near the kitchen, which had the most smoke. i don’t know if the smell is enough to get them sick, but that’s all that’s left.
i hope they will be okay..we are in the process of finding a new vet for them since my other one retired, so we would have to make a new appointment somewhere..i just have to hope they will be okay until a check up.
thank you again for your calming words..i’m so worried for them right now and this was a breath of fresh air.

Totally get it...Just relax if something was going to happen it would have happened already. If there was an issue, you said Wednesday when it happened anything acute would already have happened. Your flock is in the clear.

Plus GCCs are one of the most hardiest parrots... (strong survival) so they are fine.

As stated calm down. Take care of yourself so you can take care of your critters. Continue observing, if you are a worry wart (as I am), take them to avian vet. Insist that they listen to airways. Normal air movement will be a big relief for you.
