used cage had small roaches

Hello,
Awhile back I bought a used cage - it apparently had those German cockroaches lurking in the bars. I now have a small colony. Have put down the boric acid (out of reach) and am going to get the diatomaceous earth. I have read that the Maxforce gel is very effective on eliminating the population. Has anyone used this. There would be no way the birds could get to the places I can put it - just wondering if it has an odor.

I guess I'm unclear on a normal cage where a colony of roaches could live and not be wiped out with pressure washing or steam cleaning? I would personally probably get rid of the cage if there were places for roaches to infest that cleaning couldn't take care of. Not worth the risk or hassle. And if it was in an environment it was left to be infested with roaches, who knows what other diseases it harbors that could put your bird at risk. Many avian diseases can survive for years in dry dust that just needs a few particles to get in your bid. Just sounds dangerous to me, but maybe I'm not understanding the full picture of whats going on?

When getting a used cage I wash the heck out of them before they come into my home. Those high pressure steam cleaner will rid most of those stuffs when you place the nozzle in the crevices.

Back in the old condo where we used to live was infested with roaches that my partner's ex roommate brought in before I moved in. It was absolutely disgusting as I would turn on the lights and there was be a colony of them hanging out on the counters. I kicked out the roommate as she's a slob and threw all her stuffs out, she owed me 2 months of rent that I paid for her. After that is when the battle with roaches begin. We rid ALL the food in the house, even in the fridge, there is no food kept in the house. I find where they like to hide and spray the heck out of those places. Their favorite place was behind the fridge where it was warm. We set off bombs in all the rooms, bleached all the counters, floors, cabinets, everything we can bleach. Then I place roach motels in strategic locations. Within a month I had them all dead, obsessive compulsive disorder helps in this case....lol.....Never seen another roach in that condo after that, but that was before we brought any animals in. Will not suggest in treating that way with animals around.

We had squatters move in next door and they lived there for a little over a year with no trash service. Anyway, when they were finally evicted the roaches stayed. They then had workers come and work on the home and make it all spotless and beautiful they evicted the roaches, which came over to my house. I live in a 5th wheel on a piece of property. I started noticing one, then two, then five. I clean clean cleaned. They would not go away. The last straw for me was when I found one in my shower. Up to this point they were only in my kitchen. And now one in my shower. I didn't sleep well that night having dreams that my wall were infested with roaches. So I told my husband he had better call someone or I am going to got stay in a hotel because I will not live with bugs. Fortunately, we have a friend who is an exterminator, he wanted to bomb the trailer, but I told him that was impossible because I have birds. I had no place to put them, so instead he suggested the gel. He came placed the gel, my cost 10.00 for the product, and I haven't seen not one roach. That was almost a year ago. I can't say anything about the MaxGel, but the gel he used is odorless, and I have no idea where he placed it. My birds have never been affected by it. I hate roaches witha passion. They make me feel dirty, even though I am a clean person.

Everyone's going to hate me (still) for being a "filthy pig", but cockroaches are everywhere here in Australia. Outside they do a brilliant job of making the compost for your garden. They are actually very clean. There was another thread about them and I posted a link. A cockroach was cleaner than a person.

Do they sell cockroach baits over there? They are little plastic things with some bait in the middle (the cockroaches can walk in to eat the poison, but it's not open to everyone else). To get rid of them inside, use the "nest kill" baits. The poison in those gets rid of the nest as well as the live cockroaches. You do need to remove the egg cases, because they stick them on things. Washing all the nooks and crannies as suggested will remove any stubborn egg cases.

There are gel baits the exterminators use, what it does is to cause them to be unable to have any babies. Their wings would stick up looking all sickly. Eventually resulting in death without producing any offspring.
