Very quite amazon

I have a 5 month old amazon and he is the quietest bird I have ever owned. He does not have any sort of squawk, all he does is talk. Will he eventually develop a squawk? This might sound like a stupid question, but he is so quiet

He most likely will. I have never heard of a mute bird. I would give it time.

How long have you had him, Tyler? Fred talked a lot when I first brought him home, and I thought maybe he didn't know how to "squawk"....Once he got comfortable, I discovered that he does indeed know how. Luckily, he doesn't do it often, and it is very shortlived.

Thanks for the replies. I have had him since 1 month old. He is now 5 months old. I have had everything from a parakeet to a very LOUD Toucan, and they were all louder than my amazon.

I think it's still early...he's likely to get a little noisier. I actually don't find my Amazon to be what I'd call loud. The volume is loud, but he screams so little that it's not a problem. When he talks, which is often, it's generally in a nomal volume. The only time that I'd call Fred loud, is when he's yelling words, which he sometimes does if the house is noisy, and conversation is loud...loud TV or music.

They all get louder... wait for a couple of years , when they get sexually mature, that is between age 4-6 , Its in their DNA, they always get loud in the morning at the sunrise, and in the evening in the sunset... And they do a real orcestra , my Lilly BFA is an 6 monts old , and she is very quiet bird... thalks a little and mummbles a lot, and visles a lot (she learned from us), but I have a few friends that owns amazons, bit older... if you are living in a city block... can be very frustrating for the neigbours, but if you are in your own house, that shouldn't be a problem they have their own "orcestra" twice a day 10-20 mins, extremly loud, but everyone sad to me, that you get use to it, they say that they does't even hear it anymore . Also, they imitate everything, and if they live in a peacefull enviroment, they usually are quiet birds, but if they live with other birds that are screaming... they start to imitate their screams, and they can be the loudest

Fred is a little over six years old...I'm hoping he's already reached sexual maturity, but I've seen nothing hormonal so far....other than a lttle moodiness, which is "normal" for Amazons. I do hope that Fred is one of those in which hormones are not too bad....
Tyler, if your home is quiet, he may never get really loud. Fred was much louder when he first came than he is now. He lived with a Cockatoo in his previous home, and the owners yelled at him....a lot! He's lowered his voice considerably! It does help to stay calm and no shouting! LOL!
I do agree, lordburrito, that we do indeed get used to it. Someone came to my house to buy bird cages a while back, and her first comment was, "My Goodness...What a racket!" The Budgies, and Canary were chirping sweetly...Levi and Fred were quiet. I didn't hear a racket but she did! It's all relative, I suppose!!!

You definitely do get used to it. I have 4 pairs of cockatiels, pair of ringnecks, and pair of conures. When people come to my house they don't know how i live with all the noise. It doesn't bother me at all. If my amazon does develop a squawk it wont bother me, I just wondered why he is as quite as he is.

Wow! A Quiet Amazon. That was one of the things I was warned about when I purchased mine, 14 years ago. I now know that a lot of what we have gone through since she was 10 is her reaching sexual maturity. I was warned that females are very vocal when they reach this age. Thinking she was a male, I was a bit perplexed. So good to be able to say she's hormonal. Just like my teenage female students. No difference! except her eggs are probably harder to lay. (I wish theirs were! Fewer pregnancies, maybe?) Sorry, just a statement I had to make. Roxanne

He'll get loud give it time. Luckliy my zon is manageable and only does it on the morning evening and when music is played. He doesn talk but grunt and mumble. Nbut he used to be a breeder. So he never was around anything but hollering macaws and conures. And other amazons. I hope he'll talk but Idc. He's such a cuddlie hands on bird vs most iv seen. Including babies.
But give it time. He'll hoot lol

my blue front is 7 years old and she never squawks. she talks very little when she is happy but other than that you would never know she is around. we adopted her from and older couple who kept her pretty much cage bound so we are working on getting her to be included in our family

Interesting information.

I grew up with a blue front amazon (My step dads bird but I took care of her) and at the time, she was about 15. He had her since she was a baby (this was back when they were still importing) and she rarely ever squawked.
We brought home a mexican red head that screamed alot. Well, the blue front learned how to squawk. :12: She would still whistle and say a few words but that was it. She loved to squawk once she had a fellow feathered friend show her how!

Well I've had my yellow nape for 26 years and I remember when he used to squawk and scream. I could hear it from a block away. I agree that when he was 5-6 years old he was the wildest. At that time I also had a bunch of other birds in the house so that could be the cause. These behaviors went away when he was 10-15 years old and now he only gets loud when singing and talking while we're in other rooms. This has been a one bird house for the past 8 years so I think that also plays a big part.

Just you wait! lol. Bean was super quiet when I first brought him home, now he has these screaming fits once in awhile. Oh man they are loud. I usually say "Inside voices please, or the cage will be covered." His don't really last that long, but once in awhile he lets it all come out.
