OK... So we have had "Precious" since yesterday and we now believe SHE is a HE! SHE is no longer "Precious".....HE is SMOKEY :green:

What make you think she's a HE?

The way he is interacting with Our Prissy.

Males and females can mate and masturbate in similar/same ways in conures, and head bob and regurgitate! So it's no guarantee one way or the other! ;)

My mitred conure, assumed male (19 years old, hasn't laid an egg!) regurgitates food, but thankfully never offers me any!

Jayde, red throated conure, 3 years old and supposedly has laid eggs (therefore confirmed female) has regurgitated for me as well and even offered me the food.... eeewww!!!!!! LOL

I was SURE both my GCCs were boys, and the breeder I got them from thought they were boys too...until I had both of them DNA'd, and it turns out Fiji is a GIRL! No need to change her name, Fiji works either way. However, both of them do the head bob thing. THANK GOD there has been no hanky panky going on with them yet, no humping, etc.

btw, Smokey is super cute! I love his new name, my husband is a firefighter and wanted to name one of our GCCs smokey too :D

lol No way to tell gender in young birds XD But I really like the name Smokey, it goes well with a boy or a girl too.

My friends thought their African grey was a boy for 16 years, then one morning Ernie laid an egg XD Also the people I adopted Kenji from had a 25 year old macaw, at 24 "he" laid his first egg LOL

Wow!! Is the head bobbing a girl thing usually? Any insight on behavior would be appreciated. I'm thinking I will have them DNA tested. Would like to know for sure. Don't want to end up a breeder!!! 😜 They are 4 and 5 months right now so am I safe for now?

You should be ok until they are about 8 months old....

Aww... just call him "My...prrrrrrrecioussssssssss' from LOTR. ;) Teach him LOTR phrases like "My precious' 'It's mine, my own' ..tehehe..

Nope.... my only conure that didn't head bob was Noel, my cherry head, but he did a behavior that my current two don't do.

Both Charlie and Jayde (assumed male & egg laying female) head bob. Both regurgitate. Both bang their beaks on the cage bars or on other surfaces. Charlie once ran his beak along the top of an old CRT TV. Charlie masturbates. Don't know if Jayde does or ever has, but I also have a female cockatiel that masturbates.

Once saw a video of a green cheek conure humping "his" owners hand. DNA sex said male! LOL

Hybrids can happen between the two, and they wouldn't be anything spectacular to look at, unfortunately. =\ Although if Prissy is a male and Smokey a female, then you could have yellowside/opaline hybrids.

Fiery Shouldered Conures aren't green cheeks though, so you should probably remove the "GC" from Smokey's species name. :)

I have heard of green cheek conures breeding as early as 5 and 6 months old and successfully hatching chicks... so I can't say that you shouldn't be worried! It can happen, although unusual for them to go at it so early!

5-6 month is pretty young to start ehh...lol...our children grows up so quick.... ;)

Oh my!!! I need to have them tested ASAP!! They have separate cages but they have been playing on the play stand supervised.

If he isn't a GCC what kind is he? I am learning slowly but surely.

Both boys and girls head bob. I remember I had thought Lilo was a Poncho and when she was at the vet, he felt the pelvic bone and 90% sure he was a she! You can tell by the spread of the pelvic bone sometimes. And I pretty sure that smokey is a fiery shoulder green cheek

I'm positive it's a full blooded fiery shouldered conure, not a hybred with a GCC. The lighting is really bad in her photo, but her bird has the same subtle feather patterning, and the orange shoulder on her bird is just starting to molt in

That is exactly how Smokey looks (the second pic you posted). In the picture I posted he had his head pulled back and you couldn't see all the colors on his shoulder. I got him at Petsmart and he was sold to me as a Fancy GCC. So...there is no green cheek in that? Just Firey Sided Conure??? I have so much to learn!

lol I used to work at Petsmart and I've seen black capped conures, and maroon bellied conures brought to stores under the label "fancy green cheek". If none of the employees are parrot savvy they won't know any better. I can understand someone mistaking a maroon belly, but never a fiery shoulder or black capped lol

You found yourself a little gem, consider yourself very lucky that Petsmarts mistake was your gain :)

SOOO....Is my prissy a Yellow-Sided Green Cheek Conure or Just a Yellow-sided Conure?

Your Prissy is a coloration of the GCC so a Yellow-Sided Green Cheek Conure!
