Green Cheek Conure
Hi, I bought Rory, a green cheek conure, about a month ago, he (gender is unknown, assuming he's a he) is now 5 months old. He was parent reared but is becoming more tame every day, has recently started taking food out of my hand and likes being around me - just won't let me touch him yet!

In the past 2 days when I sometimes go near his cage he goes into his snuggle / cosy hut and sort of lies on his chest, putting his head into the ground, and his right wing starts flapping and he makes little noises (quite soft sounding which he doesn't make on any other occasions)

Just wondering if anybody else has experienced this behaviour or if anybody knows why he might be doing it?

Thanks,

Jamie

Hi Jamie - that is normal according to our black capped conure! He does the same thing to me. It means stay away, I'm happy in my snuggle hut.
If you're worried about him becoming broody, you might want to take out the snuggle hut!

my rose crowned conure does the same ,but he does it to get attention.
Speaking of that he's doing it right now.

That sounds like classic conure hormonal stuff. Mine also went into hormonal mode very recently and he does similar things, including trying to reguritate on me or favorite toys and such, and even going so far as to try to hump my shoulder. I generally distract him with toys when he acts like that. Apparently, breeding season for conures is from December to May. So it's normal :) sleepy huts can become places where they feel extra hormonal and "nesty"' so if he becomes super-crazy about his hut then simply remove it.

Thanks for your replies.. I was thinking it could of been hormonal but he's only 5 months old and I thought GCC didn't sexually mature until 2-3 years? He loves his snuggle hut and sleeps in it but I may have to remove it for a while if the behaviour continues

If you do have to remove his hut (and are feeling 'bad' cause he loves it and sleeps in it. LoL) you might try replacing it with a "Cozy Corner". It's a little snugly thing that they just lean up against. My GCC's have loved theirs and snuggle up to them at night or nap time. Best of luck!!
