My g/f buys "parrot food" at Wal-mart. I don't have a package handy to tell you exactly what it is because she dumps it into a plastic container.

Baby & Max eat the pellets and sunflower seeds but they leave behind a lot of it (including corn) that we're throwing out for wild birds.

Is there some particular brand of food we could get at pet store that wouldn't be so wasteful?

[I bet this has been covered before but I tried searching this forum and general information with keyword "food" and didn't find any threads in the first couple pages that seemed to address it]

Thanks. I was looking in the wrong place.

There are a variety of great foods out there for our parrots, but also SO many foods out there that are very bad for them. Many generic bird foods have tons of sunflower seeds in them that are very high in fat and bad for parrots, pretty much like giving them cheeseburgers and fries. I recommend feeding Tropimix, Volkmann's seed mix, Zupreem pellets, and also a very important part of wild parrot's diets....fresh fruits and vegetables!!

This is called bird CHOP, and you can make it in a big batch at a time and freeze it so it lasts longer, or serve it fresh every day. The idea is to chop several fruits and veggies (you can also feed them cooked beans, whole grain pastas) into a mix for them to enjoy on a daily basis. Check out my recent thread about my latest batches of CHOP here!

My two cockatiels enjoy a mix of the foods I've mentioned. I'll mix it up sometimes and also give them some of their old seeds, but I like to try to give them food as healthy as possible :) I buy my food from Chewy.com and Amazon.com!

For our buddies, we feed them, TOPS(great), Zupreem(natural and fruity), Roudybush,- seeds, TOPS and Abba seed soak, mostly sprouted. I buy in bulk at a fraction of the bag price and store everything in a freezer!
As for waste, get used to it! As you said, wild bird feeder, perfect solution! The TOPS pellets are very pricey, but zero corn and soy, excellent quality! JoJo eats and pulverizes the rest! My solution to the rest? I feed it to the insects that I raise for my reptiles!
As I said don't sweat the waste! This past week just cost us $3500 for an accident involving one of our pets!

Such great advice so far! Specialty pellets mixed sparingly with a quality seed mix are excellent supplements to "chop" aka fresh fruits and vegetables. The latter two can be found ar WalMart!

Harrison's Bird Foods
I feed Harrison's, supplemented by fresh healthy treats. My first, and later, my current avian vet recommended it. 30-ish years ago, Harrison's was still a small company. My vet was actually able to talk to Dr. Harrison about my bird's species and status, and they decided on the High Potency. My bird loves the pellets now, but to get him converted, my avian vet suggested putting pellets out all day, and putting seeds (his old diet) out for two 15-minute periods a day. That would sustain him but leave him hungry enough to try new stuff. I presume the same technique could be used to get him to eat other healthy stuff. My guy was eating pellets in a couple of days, and now I can feed a good variety of other stuff, knowing he has the pellets as a basic. Pellets are out all day... fresh treats a few times a day.
