Kiwi, 7 year old Orange wing Amazon
I am a new and first time Amazon owner, I adopted Kiwi who is 7 just a few months ago.
So am I the only one who LOVES LOVES LOVES the way their bird SMELLS? I have always like the way birds smell, I've had green cheeks, parakeets and enjoyed the feathery-scent but this is getting WEIRD. I am reminding myself of Dennis Hopper in 'Blue Velvet'!
It's his beak or his breath, I am not sure, but it is like I am, well, you know, just dizzy with desire. Thank goodness he is a lover and lets me kiss him all over, because I cant help myself!
Am I a FREAK?

lolol Thats the amazon smell:D Amazon owners regularly sniff their birds:p They do smell so good! I was just sitting with mine sniffing and cuddling him for awhile....

O man, you're hooked now:D Welcome to the amazon huffers group! The sign of a true zon lover is when you WANT to bury your nose in your birds feathers and inhale deeply:p I sniff Kiwi regularly:54:, especially when he's happy as the scent is extra strong:52:

And you aren't imagining him smelling extra nice either. Amazons really do produce a special scent that no other parrot does.

Me too. We just got home from the park. I was getting some "interesting" looks at the park because I was talking to and kissing on my bird:30:

ohmyword, thank GOD! i thought it might just be ME! LOL!
my 11 year old daughter is totally grossed out, calling it a 'make out session' and says its 'just wrong'!

Lol I noticed the distinct smell, way different than my conures. Can't say that I inhale it but I did notice it.

LOL, you're so funny! My lil birds don't really smell much, but I can smell them after the shower and I like it so much. To me my birds are like my babies and I love everything about them (although they sometimes really upset me like real kids).

Yup, it's weird, this bird-huffing habit. But it's way weirder not to do it.

My Bourke's Parakeet has a very gentle almost flowery scent o.o or I just imagine it smells that way XD I love it and though he's still getting used to me I sniff him whenever he allows. XDDD

I don't know about my mom's amazon.... she doesn't exactly like me and definitely won't let me sniff her XD

Here we go,,, another zon huffer. It;s so addictive , LOL.

When I got buddy he stunk. He hadn't bathed in a long time. His first shower, oh my what a stinker. Now he smells wonderful. It's definitely addicting.

It's just too bad that the general population doesn't realize what type of pets parrots can be. Many people see birds as a lower life form than mammals :( and are shocked to learn these are animals that can actually reciprocate love and show intelligence! What?! They don't just sit in a small cage all day (with one perch and no toys like on tv)? Lol

Poor Buddy:( Hearing that makes me so sad. He's lucky you got him! I bet it felt so good for him his first bath! And I bet he likes frequent baths and smelling good too;)

I know. I had Kiwi sitting on my leg playing with a foot toy, minding my own business and some lady felt it was her duty to let me know (via shouting from a ways away as she walked by) "it's going to fly away you know". People are on one end of the spectrum or the other. Some are SO curious about him it boarders on irritating and others act offended he's out and not locked up in his tweety bird cage, "where he belongs":31:

Personally, i too love the smell of my birds, and they all have their own smell. My blue and gold Maya, i always tell her "Maya! you smell like a blue and gold! She smells the same as every blue and gold i've come across. And my Baby Sun Conure has been sitting under my neck a lot and when i give him kisses my nose touches him and i always get a wiff, and the past 2 days i have noticed myself getting addicted to the smell of him and going in just to sniff him. Weird right? I dont care! So i'm guessing its normal for you and i. ^^

April, I'm surprised you get so many comments! I would expect looks and stares, but not so many people saying things. That lady was super rude! I mean, who says that?! :11:

I've seen this too, with family. I thought the kids would love Buddy but they fear him. As long as there are boundaries in place, the kids are mesmerized from afar, if not like the cage door is open or he's out with me, they panic. I haven't found anyone I trust other than my parents for Buddy to stay with, again fear of birds, me no fear. BUT, roosters are another story but I know why I fear roosters. When I was eight, I boldly walked up to a rooster to look at him and he boldly flailed up, and chased me to my Aunt's back door trying to spur me. He got me one time so I can understand some of the fear. I agree a lot of people know very little about how smart, loving and wonderful birds are. I'm hoping to get Buddy out in his harness but we are still working on that.

Good job guys now that kiwi is letting me touch her all over and snuggle I catch myself huffing zon. I do it without thinking, my parents have become worried.:green:

I will never forget the distinct and wonderful smell of my beautiful Lilac Crowned Amazon, Bacci.

When we got Boom Boom, our YNA, he smelled wonderful, but different. I would wonder.... He smells familiar....what is his scent reminding me of? Then one day, I was making vodka sauce, and I was slicing prosciutto.....and BAM! That was it. Booms smell was exactly like prosciutto (not the cheap kind, the expensive good stuff from the Italian deli). I thought I was losing my mind, and I decided I wasn't going to say anything, but Boom was fast deciding that my mom was his favorite person. Where she had previously been afraid of being bitten by the birds, and appreciated them from afar, Boom Boom charmed her. They love each other, and she can handle him with no fear. The day after I realized what his scent reminded me of, my mom was kissing Boom on his beak, and he was dancing with her, and she goes "oh boy, I can smell him!..........he smells like proscuitto!" So then I knew I wasn't totally crazy!

We are a house full of shameless Birdy Huffers.

I thought it was just me! My Mom thinks I am weird! :54: Yesterday when she was visiting (bringing her "Grandbird" some spoils from her garden) I was kissing and "sniffing" Zilla. :D Who amazingly was letting me for the first time ever! :D It made my Mom really happy when Zilla allowed her to scratch her head (another first for anyone but me since I got her)

I feel like a normal Zon parent now that I know it's normal for us! :green:
