Liang Zai "pretty boy" in Mandarin Chinese.
3-year-old Jenday supervisor!
Canary: Johann Sebastian Bird
Liang Zai - means "pretty boy" in Mandarin Chinese, likes peanuts.
I'll hand him a whole peanut in the shell and he'll open it and eat.

But I just read that peanuts may not be good for him because of a fungus.

Can someone recommend a mix of foods and where I should obtain them?
We are in Denver, Colorado, USA.

We offer new foods to Liang Zai but he refuses most.

He did seem to like a piece of dog biscuit which Sheeler left on this computer desk.
Or was ithat Liang Zai just liked chewing it up into pieces?

Liang Zai often flies over to me and lands on my shoulder.
I give him a small piece of toast which I am enjoying and he will eat it dropping crumbs down my neck.

Thank you.

Robert

Hi, welcome to the forum!

You're right, peanuts and dried fruit aren't good for your birdy!

As you are in the USA I think pellets are easily obtainable for you. Seeds are a bit like Mcdonalds are too us, so not too many! Harrisons is the best pellet.

Nuts are a good source of nutrient but again, not too many. Hazelnuts, brazil nuts, cashew nuts, plain popcorn.....

A varied diet of fruit and veg is great for conures. For example my sun conure has broccoli, carrot, peas, sweetcorn, spinach, kale (vit K is important for our type of bird as they can suffer from blood clots in later life which a diet high in vit k can help prevent as it is "nature's warfarin".) Fruit....papaya, pineapple, apple, pear, fresh coconut....I could go on forever. As long as it is all thoroughly washed (preferably organic to ensure no pesticides), no skins or seeds of any fruit.

All these are just examples :)

I wouldn't go too far with the toast.....white bread is not good for parrots and they are lactose intolerant so not too much butter(salt isn't good either). There are many "birdie bread" recipes available which you may enjoy! :D

I'd suggest you get a book so you have information on hand at all times (wwwaaayyyy easier than turning on a pc lol). Parrot for Dummies is great despite the title lol. I'd also advise a breed specific book. My favourite out of mine is The Conure Handbook by Anne C Watkins (sorry all, how many times have you read THAT recently??? lol).

Can't wait to see pics of your jenday. Having a sunny, I am very fond of them! :D

They are top of the line and expensive but I usually suggest Harrisons Pellets. They have no art. colors, totally organic and have all the vit. birds need. You store them in the refigerator. You can buy them from an avain vet or on line. a 5 pound bag cost in the $30's.

http://www.tailfeathersnetwork.com/birdinformation/pellets.php I love Colorado. Daughter lives in Aspen and I have visited many times. Bet you have snow already. When people describe their birds as grouchy it can mean the bird is not gettng enough quality sleep. Need about 10-12 hrs. each night in a quiet room with no voices, music or TV.
