What Would You Do? GCC in need of help.

Hello parrot forum members!

I have been a lurker here for years but never really thought to make an account. However, I am faced with a difficult question. I went to a pet store recently and found a green cheek conure for sale. He/She has been behind glass alone for so long that the poor thing has plucked all his/her top feathers off leaving only fuzzy down. His/her nails are extreemly overgrown. The store has this bird marked down 50% to try and get rid of it. I don't like tge idea of purchasing a bird from a pet store that obviously doesn't care about the well being of their stock... but I've been thinking about this bird non stop and how lonley and miserable he/she must be. So, what would you guys do?

A little about me: I'm a work from home adult with a budgie and a green cheek conure. I have tons of space and time to dedicate to birds.

Hello, and welcome to the Parrot Forums family!

I'd say that there are store birds in need of rescuing as well. It's unfortunate that said store should profit at all from you getting that bird out of there, but I'd honestly see it as a secondary concern. Fact is, the little guy/gal is probably miserable there. So if you have the means, the space and the patience needed to nurture a bird that has been dealt a pretty rough hand, you should go for it.

Just remember to enact a strict quarantine period (3 months) and get him/her to an avian vet for testing as soon as possible. You definitely don't want to endanger your current flock.

Hi guys! I'm so sorry I didn't update this sooner. By the time I got the quaranteen cage cleaned up and set up, the GCC that was store bound was bought by another person who I know and who will give her an equally good home! I feel relived to know she isn't stuck in a glass box any longer I'm also glad to know I live in a place that has more than just me looking out for the little floofs and not afraid to step in. Guess now if I find any more little guys in need somewhere then I have everything ready to go! Thank you all for your answers. I talked to the manager of the store and they confirmed to me that they will no longer be stocking GCCs as they don't have the means to properly provide attention to them.
