What would you put in your birdie "out and about" bag?

If one were actually a crazy enough bird lady to be contemplating keeping one's eye out for a gently used diaper bag at garage sales this summer for hauling bird gear on longer excursions/day trips:27::54::30: what kind of things might you bring in it? I've always brought Kiwi's stuff in my purse but it often gets quite stuffed. Now we're getting a NICE but large mister bottle that I think both the bird and myself (and probably my husband) will enjoy having while out hiking, at the beach etc... and frankly, that just isn't going to fit in my already bulging full purse. Might as well just go full crazy bird lady and get a gear bag. So what shall I put in it? Thinking:

-Coop cups and holders (I don't leave them permanently in the POB
-Harness and leash
-Bottle of water from home
-Dry food
-Couple small toys
-Mister bottle
-Couple rags in case some kind of bird mess occurs where it oughtn't occur
-Short wood dowel in case a stick step up is required
-Towel

What else

Over the many years and the many different laptop's the company has issued me has come with any number of computer bags of varying sizes, but all black.

The Dell bags have proven the best as they have additional inside and outside pockets, the majority with zippers on them, plus the dividers on the inside provide separate places for thin wide stuff, like sheets of news paper, etc. Shifting or removing the spacers in the computer pocket inside provides a large area for stuff like a hand held perch, etc..

- We fill it with everything needed for a minimum three day, three night outing.
- We include a must have items for a first aid kit for Parrot and Humans.
- We include a travel size Wipes packet.

Up side is that it easily fits what is needed with proper care in packing and does not tend to crush stuff because of the side stiffeners. It opens flat for full access when rapid action is needed.

Down side, it is clearly a computer bag and if not carried in a concealed area in the car it can draw unwanted attention.

This huge Thread contains a ton of information for Loving and Living with Amazons. It is very possible to simply insert Parrot in place of Amazon for the vast majority of that Thread. Very near or the last Segment is a detailed review of a very complete Emergency Medical (First Aid) Kit. This kit is developed to support an individual with detailed knowledge or is being phone supported by Avian Vet or Avian Vet Tech.

Your kit should be developed based on your knowledge and expanded as your knowledge grows.

I have been debating creating one for human use, as you always seem to end up with some kind of minor scrape or cut when finding a bandage somewhere is most inconvenient. We have a comprehensive home birdie first aid kit, what would a travel kit need though? Styptic, needle nose, little bottle of peroxide, some kind of small clippers or scissors and what else:33:

Long ago, we blended the Human and Parrot Emergency Medical (First Aid) Kits. To be honest, we found that there is a large number of overlapping items. See the Post above and look at that large kit and define yours' from that large base.

FYI: Remember, it is better to up-size as you are more likely to be using it on others! Life's Realities!

Another thought: Perhaps a little 'in case of emergency' card? If for some reason you become incapacitated or get in a car accident etc... with the name of the bird, age, vet info, emergency contact etc... That I might affix to the pak-o-bird.

I have a birdie "travel bag" myself, that I actually custom ordered just for the purpose. I really just custom ordered the embroidery on it, but it is still strictly for my boys. The main part of the bag is a thermal, so that if I am carrying water and it is warm out, I can throw an ice pack in it and keep it cool for them during the day because who doesn't appreciate a cold drink? Or if we are traveling to visit family for the weekend, it can keep a couple days worth of chop cold on the drive. It also is big enough to carry their dishes, harnesses, toys for their travel cages since I don't actually travel with toys in their cages, food, spare perches, and other odds and ends. I always carry a pack of baby wipes for the inevitable "accidents" that always happen.

I also have their first aid kit which is a separate bag, but it can attach to their travel bag with a clip to make things simpler. It has things such as blood stop, a small container of hand feeding formula (in case of illness where nutritional supplementation becomes necessary) as well as other hand feeding necessities, antibiotic ointment, gauze pads, vet wrap, cipro tablets (prescribed by my vet as a just in case; since we travel quite a bit, he prescribed me 2 tablets that I can use to make an antibiotic that can be given to the birds if I am on the road and we decide they are necessary IF I TALK TO HIM FIRST). I also have band-aids in there for me. They are by far the most frequently used item in that kit. There is more, but that's all I can think of just off the top of my head.

I really like this idea! I think I might put one on each of their travel cages somehow, maybe on the bottom so they can't eat them. Then I might put a card for each bird with important info in the first aid kit, so it's easy to access and just read off of if I, or anyone else, has to call the vet in an emergency and am not thinking clearly.

How long of a travel trip? I take Rudy out for as much as 10 hrs. we have 300 plus trips so far.

He wears the harness, I have a squirt bottle that fits in back pocket. A pocket full of snacks, about 3 handfuls. An extra flight cord. I wear a shirt that he has chewed many times. (12 of them so far) A pocket knife, for sticks.

Not sure I should ever need or take anything else for a day trip.

OH! he carries the money clip.

A plastic necklace for them to chew on while you walk about. I do this but my birds are smaller so idk if you want a beak that big chewing at your neck area. I also tie toys to a shoe string and let them hang off my neck and they LOVE it.

seems like a modification pak'o'birds could have of some sort maybe? Like an extra zip pocket attached to the underside of the bag. I'd agree the main things would be a mini first aid kit, some treats, a bottle of water and one or 2 of the more desired foot toys your bird has

I may actually draw up a design for what I mean when I get a spare moment, seems like a potential addition that could be useful

I have traveled the vast majority of my working life, out a full week or three at a times. One of my Mentors recommended a travel kit, which included a 'first aid kit.' I had, with reservations, put one together and the company I was with at the time, provided a sizeable first aid kit, close of the size to the one found in "I Love Amazons" Thread.

It sat in the trunk of the company car for near a full year before the first use. I had come across a very recent multi-car crash. As I backed away and set the Hazard Lights on, a register nurse was at my window asking if I had a First Aid Kit. I pulled it out and we set our way back to the crash. She helped three individuals out of that kit that morning. To my knowledge, I have only used it a couple of times for the use of my family and Amazons. The kit have served over twenty strangers and two raptors, and a duck over the years.

There is no question that the medical emergency kit in the house has been used far more and is larger than the one listed in the I Love Amazons Thread. That said, I would not travel without one.

Great suggestions everyone! Especially those who chimed in about shouldered birds, as it's not really my area of expertise. Kiwi doesn't really like being on shoulders but he does like being in his POB!

Triggs- I think I have an idea of what you're thinking. Like how hikers keep their sleeping bag strapped to the bottom of their backpack. That may be good for male members who, you know, probably don't want to carry anything "handbag-like"

My one complaint about the POB is the lack of some sort of storage pouch. Can’t wait to see what you come up with.
