I've recently noticed that Freddie is doing something odd, that he's not done before. He has periods during the day when he's really having fun, and excited. He'll twist his head all around, strut, and usually talks or yells while he's doing it. Just excitement...normal...I think. He's recently started "biting" his leg when he gets in this mood. He doesn't really bite, just beaks, from the look of it. There's no chewing, just a quick "bite" and he continues his "fun"....Is this normal?

maybe he has scaly leg mites, check if his legs are crusty when he bites his leg, or if he doesnt then prob he's just having fun doing it and happy

Hi Sharon, it sounds like normal behavior but its hard to say without actually seeing it, my Quincy does much the same thing, in the middle of doing his dancing and carrying on he'll reach up and palm the side of his head and then mouth his leg and go right back to what he was doing, if he spent much time doing it I would say there might be a chance of it being something like parasites or some other problem, I would keep an eye on it and if he doesn't spend much time doing it or doesn't do it to often I wouldn't worry about it........:)

My amazon does that same thing, when hes playing with a new toy or just a toy he really likes. He beeps and wiggles his head all over and looks like he crazy and bites at himself pretty playfully.
But I am pretty new to bird too!
But atleast our birds do the same thing!

Thanks...I am relieved! Crazy bird!

Sounds like it's pretty normal.

Jade "sucks her thumb" sometimes when she's lying on her back getting belly rubs. Really she just beaks one of her toes with her eyes half closed, but she looks just like a little kid sucking her thumb.

Earlyn does this too... most notably when she's frustrated, or when she would probably like to bite me but is choosing not too. I have always wondered if that was her version of a clenched fist?

Birds do the strangest things lol.

Hiroshi likes to twist his head backwards and hold his head with his foot..like he's giving himself a head massage!

My girlfriend's Amazon Cody does a similar thing when being petted and scritched. It seemed odd to me too, and we commented on it to each other, but it seems to be benign. When he's getting particulaly into receiving the lovin' he flopps over onto his side to start and then grabs the leg that's up and hangs on until he's fully on his back, then he usually goes on to grabbing fingers and fabic while kicking and grasping with his feet. He never bites in this play state (yet), just hangs on with the beak and plays like a kitten or puppy, a couple of times when a leg has strayed close to the beak again he's grabbed it and rolled over again. It seems to me almost like a cat or dog chasing it's tail and is funny as hell to boot ;)

Boo does something strange like that. He'll hook one claw in his lower beak and bob his head. It's cute, if you can get past the image of someone with bulimia after a lunch date....
