what's wrong with his beak???

last night we accidently forgot to put smokey in his cage last night.
all my other birds were tucked in for the night but somehow we missed him.

when it came time for bed, I noticed that he was perched on top of our blinds.
the t.v. was on, so there was some light.
something startled him, he took off flying around the room frantically, hitting the top of the door frame twice, and flew into the door once.

today I took a picture of him and noticed 1/2 of the top of his beak is pinkish/red.
I'm sure this is a direct result of hitting something last night....do you think it's anything to worry about, ie infection, bruising etc...??
he's ok within himself today, chatting up a storm, flying around as usual, not the least bit cranky

it's his mutation. notice his white mask is coming in more? he is a whiteface mutation peach faced lovebird, which causes a white mask and a pink beak. but as babies, their beaks are more yellow. as he matures, the beak will turn more ivory-pink

as for exact mutation, he is a double dark factor whiteface peach faced lovebird, and a very handsome one at that!

I wonder if that is from bruising? I think I would see a vet just to be on the safe side. I'm thinking how when you smash a toenail you can sometimes lose it.

whew, that's a relief. the last photo I took of him was about a week ago, and he didn't have that,or I didn't notice
yes he is handsome, although not tame, but he'll come around.

He actually did have that same color on his beak in the previous photo of him, but it wasn't as quite as extensive! As long as he's eating normally and acting fine, he probably is! Keep an eye on him, though!

the beak colour changes to the pink colour as they get the adult mask in, which is what yours is doing. the change can happen so fast.

my two are seagreens, they started a slight beak change with their first molt too.

you can see when they were young their beaks were more of a solid orange-yellow

then when they reached adulthood, their beaks got the classic "Seagreen" beak, which is two toned...





but yours is whiteface, so it will turn completely ivory pink

I have a White Faced Seagreen Lovebird and White Faced Blue Pied lovebird both have a pink beak like yours my Seagreens beak is even pinker though

seagreen is a bird that is both dutch blue and whiteface so has a beak half-way between the two mutations. it's distinguished mostly by the two-toned beak. seagreens have pink-orange at the base and yellow at the tip. whitefaces have pink beaks and dutch blues have yellow beaks.

the "blue" whitefaces are technically double violet factor whitefaces, then there are "slates" like crimson's double dark factor whiteface, and then there is the regular whiteface which is green-blue like a seagreen but the face is lighter and the beak is pink. the dark factors and violet factors change the colour of the birds, but its the beak and mask that distinguish the three parblue peach face mutations

I didn't know that the different colours on the beak has to do with the different mutations....sorry if that sounds like I'm duh ....I'm really not but now I know, that's why I love learning about birds

a lot of people don't know. but when i asked for the mutations of my guys, that's what i was told, and when i went to a local bird show, i picked up a mutations and genetics book on lovebirds and learned even more on my own.

i have this book here, it's a good read.
