When you're gone

I can't take that look I get when I close the doors to the cage and tell Pritti I have to go for a while. And he just stands there on a perch in front of the the door staring at me, or climbs and hangs on the inside of the big door. So I give him a small dish of fresh fruit/veggie treats to keep him busy for 5 or 10 minutes and he could care less that I just disappeared. Hahaha - i'm not sure who the joke is on, though.

You might try getting a very large cage with plenty of toys that are changed regularly

My Alex has free roam of my room when I'm not there. You have to take steps to birdproof a room. In essence, the room becomes like a big cage. If you want to leave your bird out, just take the precautions to make it safe.

I'll never understand people who modify their bird before modifying their environment to be "safe."

This is kind of how I feel... Kiwi also never leaves her cage, ever, not once when i'm not home. Obviously I can't know this for sure, but there's never poop anywhere but on her cage. It's just the way she has lived... Regardless, I have started keeping Kiwi in her cage on the advice of the forum. In the long run I think it's a good thing, because she gets "let out" whenever i'm home, and so is always very excited to see me.

In all fairness to everyones advice, personally I think it depends on the bird itself & how well it's owner knows their bird.

One of my eclectus was never caged he lived in the living room on his big playstand for 18 months. He never tried to get of unless i asked him to step up. He was the perfect companion & still is. These day he is in an aviary with a hen & is daddy to many. LOL.

That said i wouldn't leave just any parrot out of their cage while not attended. You do get to know the ones you can & can't trust to be left to free range.

In an ideal world we should all have a good size enrichment aviary outdoors where our parrots gets to fly & enjoy the weather, chew fresh branches.

my greencheeks are pretty good birdies. i leave the cage open for my conures if i go on a short trip.
i have a designated area of toys and treats on the floor to stop them in their tracks if they jump down, its next to a long ladder attached to the cage to encourage them back to the cage.
i also have tons of play gyms and what not around the cage.
i've only ever found them outside of their cage once.. and they were all three on the couch cuddling. i just make sure everyone entering is aware to look where they sit or step.
but i put them away if its longer than an hour.
