Just wanting some opinions on when and where to start training with my Eckie. He is 13-14 weeks old and pretty baby and unco, still learning to find his own feet =D He is pretty good about stepping up and down when i want him to but i figure perfecting that is a good start. Is it to early to start with other stuff? If not, where do i start? I have a clicker which i plan on using but i am very new to bird training (have done my fair share of dog and horse training though!). Also he is pretty unco with his food (messy baby XD) so im unsure of what to use as treats? Maybe millet?

Stepping up is a great start. And nah, it's not too early to start other stuff. Haha I taught my quaker parrot to Step Up, Step Down, Wave, Spin, Kiss, and Dance within the first 2 weeks I had him. These tricks are very very easy to teach your bird. You can teach each one in only about 10 minutes or so. This guy has tutorials on youtube for teaching your bird tricks, and he also wrote a book on teaching tricks too.

After he learns the easy stuff he can advance onto the harder tricks like 'Play Dead' and you can train them to lay on their backs in your hand. Parrots have a lot of fun learning tricks but remember to not over do it and give him breaks very often. You don't want his brain to get tired.

For treats, yes millet is very good. As you have your parrot longer you'll find special foods that your bird likes. My bird LOVES papaya but your bird might like apples better. Nutriberries are a very good treat, and they are healthy too. They are made from what pellets are made of, which means they are low in fat. My Quaker Parrot loves them. You can get a bag of them at Petsmart but they may be a bit of a more expensive treat.

My bird is messy too. He thinks its hilarious to throw his food all over my floor. :49:

But anyway good luck with your Electus, and have fun learning all kinds of stuff on this here forum. Parrots will bring you a life time of laughs and poop on your clothes.

G'day.

Blueridge,

I personally do NOT like that guy in the video you posted.....He's a know it all and he's right your wrong type of person.....

Like Blueridge posted, it's never too early to start with training! I start training the babies as soon as they're weaned. It is the perfect time to teach them stuff.

If you can look beyond the personality in question he offers the best training advice I have come across in ANY forum. Step by step and reasons behind the methodology. He does have strong opinions but you have to respect his knowledge and help he has provided others. He does come across as arrogant but who cares? I've used the FREE advice/tutorials/videos to my advantage and benefited as a result. Every forum is different and it probably bodes well to take/learn from each and apply it to benefit the parrot/owner as it applies to each case.
I personally havent heard him say negative of other individuals/trainers....just a thought....

Ahem...the link was NOT for a forum. That was YouTube.

Glad to hear YOU found him to be helpful.

Hey, at least you noticed that he does come across as arrogant, which may turn some viewers off.

There are HUNDREDS of training videos out there, each person seeking one, should pick one that he/she feels most comfortable with. :)
