So I still can't stop thinking about "Bean" the 6 year old yellow fronted amazon at the bird hut. I have visited him several times, he seems to really like me.

Everything I'm finding online says a yellow fronted should have a "grey beak with spots of bone and orange" on it. His beak is all bone colored with no other colors on it. His previous owners also ground off his top beak to be "flat" so there is no point on it and it hasn't grown back. It's long enough he eats fine, but I'm wondering if it will ever grow back, and if it doesn't will it cause him problems later in his life?

The information I have gotten on him is he is 6 years old and was given up a little over a year ago. I'm thinking his owners didn't know how to deal with his hormones??? He has been vetted and quarantined before being brought to the bird hut (the owner does this before bringing new birds to the store) He's a bit on the "chubby" side (or maybe that's just how I'm seeing him since he is bigger than Zilla)

He hasn't been DNA sexed and neither has Zilla. Is this something I should do before bringing him home? Or does it really matter if they will be caged separately? I won't be breeding them and I don't really care what sex either of them are, but would it make a difference in my approach to training and/or "reading" their body language?

I have a little over a month before having to make a decision. Zilla goes to the vet for her, hopefully, last vet check (and hopefully be pronounced not contagious anymore)

Is there anything else I should consider before making my decision?

What you're referring to is a Yellow crowned amazon, if I remember correctly. Parrots beaks are a form of keratin, and like our nails, they keep growing all the time constantly. So her beak will be fine, but it will take a while till it looks natural again. Dont worry about it.

He seems to be a bit unique when it comes to that beak. Could you post a few pictures of him maybe? it would be helpful to determine what he is. If you feel that he really is the bird for you, and that you have the time and budget. Then go for it! These parrots are some AMAZING hyped parrots that love to show off! One of my absolute favourites!

Although the picture is not the best, but he is very handsome! What if it's "she" - are the two hot ladies gonna get along? :)

That's what I was thinking.

If you want this bird and don't have that 'Bad idea- you shouldn't do it' feeling deep down, then start planning for a second fid!

LOL! We've all heard that little voice before!

I was told "he" is 6 years old. Wouldn't he have his "true" adult colors by now?

Seriously, I know next to NOTHING about any of the zon species except what I have learned here and read on "google" and I've concentrated on OWA's because of Zilla.

I admit zons were never on my wish list. I was going to get either a galah or a CAG until Zilla needed me! I've learned a LOT in 3 months, but still have a long ways to go.

I know now I am a zon person and I gravitate to them whenever I am out at the bird hut or pet stores, but am I ready to take on another one? I know I want at least one more bird at some point, but is it too soon, or should I just take the plunge?

I feel a connection with Bean, and whenever I visit the bird hut I see him looking for me when he hears my voice. If he's in his cage he sticks his foot out between the bars and wants me to pick him up, if he is out on a gym he acts like he is going to jump onto me if I don't let him step onto my arm. The owner says he doesn't do this with anyone else, and no one else has been interested in him (not sure if this is true, I can't believe no one else would be interested in him)

I don't know??? Should I have the DNA tests done before I make my decision? Zilla isn't DNA'd either, there is a possibility she is a he???

What are the chances of female/female or male/male getting along? It would suck if they hated each other and couldn't be out together. Still doable, but more difficult.

Zilla is much older at 28 and has been around other birds for years before I got her, and Bean has lived at the bird hut with lots of other birds for over a year now, does that help the chances of them getting along?

If you've got a connection, get 'em! Seriously, if an adult bird has picked you that is a connection worth retaining.

For what's it's worth, I also would say there's a really good chance he's a DYHA (Double Yellow Headed Amazon). While he could continue to get more yellow, they actually don't all have fully yellow heads. I've seen a fair amount of them with that same pattern of yellow as Bean.

Bean is most certainly a DYH. Not all DYHs have a huge amount of yellow and they continue to grow yellow throughout their lives, so his head will continue to get more yellow over the years. When my mom got her DYH Lucy, she had less yellow than bean. Now her head is yellow and it's spreading down her neck (over the course of 40 years). I *LOVE* DYH's, perhaps I'm biased because of Lucy because she's an awesome bird. They topped my list as most desirable bird when we were looking though. And the fact you feel a connection and he seems to love you already? So long as Zilla is pronounced healthy and you have the ability to take on another bird, why NOT bring beautiful Mr. Bean home?:D

I don't know why not April! I want to, that's for sure! I guess I just wanted to ask you guys and make sure I wasn't jumping into this MBS (multiple bird syndrome) too fast! I also need to make sure I am doing the right thing for both birds. Zilla was in a bad situation and needed rescuing and health care desperately, Bean is not in a bad situation, he is being cared for properly, has been vetted and is healthy, so there really is no "rush" to get him (except that someone else could go snatch him up)

You are correct in calling Bean a yellow front amazon. DYH, YNA,Pans,YCA etc are all subspecies of the yellow fronted amazons. DYH is just more accurate description.

The only pic of him is the one on the bird hut's website. He is almost at the bottom on the right. It's hard to see his beak, and not a very good picture of him, but it's all I have right now.

Well I've searched around a bit on the internet, and I found that the picture you provided of him, looks ALOT, if not exactly the same as a Yellow shouldered amazon. But I might be wrong. Check below links for some examples.

The yellow shouldered is actually a pretty rare species in the US. A member here has one. They are a smaller Amazon. Hard to tell by pics, but Bean looks bigger, and I bet he's a DYH, since you see many more of them here than YSA. ;)

I would bet on the DYH cause he is a big boy. Zilla weighs about 350 grams and he is probly closer to 400 (maybe a bit more) if I had to guess.

He looks like a DYH to me, my Bosley weighs in at 500 grams and he's an active healthy boy.

Hope this pics works

Go for it Amanda! Of course, we're probably biased as we now have 2 DYH's:20:
Lil Chodi is around 445 grams and Gizmo is pushing 500. From my research, as they get older the yellow spreads considerably. Remember they do belong to the hot three:cool:

The yellow can spread but as you can see my Bosley is 38 and it's only spreading so far. He does have patches of yellow on the back of his head though that is not yet connected to his front face.
