I need to rehome one of my birds

We rescued a yellow naped amazon 2 years ago and over the last year she has bonded with my son. Since then, she has become uncontrollably aggressive towards me (searching the house to find me and attack me, fly at me, etc) and has bitten me HARD countless times. I have had countless training help only to have it increase and leave me with multiple scars. Recently her attack on my face ended up with a trip to the emergency room for stitches and now plastic surgery to fix. I have never given up on a rescue before, but I feel that my safety is more important than how much we love her. I would love to find her a home that is a better fit for her - any suggestions please!

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

Very sorry to hear this.
I wouldn't allow her free range of the house. I would also clip wings so she cannot fly. It may take her aggression down a notch.

But someone with more experience with these kinds of issues will come on.

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

It happens.

You can't have a bird trying to rip your face off.

It sounds like a hormonal/overbonding issue...

But I've seen overbonded hot 3's trying to drive other birds/other people away from their "chosen one" and it isn't pretty...

NO ONE CAN BLAME YOU FOR THAT...

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

The same situation will happen again unless someone steps up and trains the bird. I just rehomed a YNA hen yesterday. I might consider taking in your zon but really still have a house full of rehomes and don't need any more.

maybe consider posting some more history about your bird in the zon section and see if we can help? I'm a couple of hours west of you in Palmetto/Parish

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

I would seek out a professional shelter or even better, a sanctuary that does not adopt out to give her to. DO NOT sell a bird like that on craigslist. That will just put her in the situation of possibly being neglected or even killed by an inexperienced owner who receives the same 'treatment' by her you have but isn't so understanding. She needs to go to a place who knows what they are doing with birds who have behavioral problems and have the experience to handle her aggression. So sorry you've had to make this difficult decision

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

We are Maggie's 3rd owner and she is my 3rd rescue. When we adopted her she was living under a sofa hiding from other parrots who were trying to attack her. She had a diet of birdseed and doritos and was actually "grey" from all the ash from the heavy smoking by the owners. We FINALLY got her to eat a good diet, cleaned up her feathers and she is beautiful. She sees a vet regularly for beak and nail trims. We had her on a training schedule and was stick/clicker trained and would step up on my hand and let me scratch her. Not anymore. She loves to talk but has no interest in any type of toy. She tolerates my other parrot , just not me. She adores my son, tries to feed him and lets him do just about anything to her. She only hollers in the morning when trying to wake up my son. We moved the perches in her cage so they are all 4 inches below my eye level and she is not allowed to roam our house ( suggestions from previous online help) but she has only gotten more aggressive. This is my 3rd face scar now so I don't think keeping her is best for her or us. This is the first time I have ever "failed" an animal but keeping her in her cage all the time so she doesn't hurt me isn't fair to her either.

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

As Birdman666 said, sounds like she is overbonded with your son.
I would consider her, but my JoJo comes first in safety and such. I realy feel for all of you!

Re: I need to rehome one of my birds

Question,
What Vet do you use? We use Dr. Geiler, Eastside Veterinary Hospital, out of Clermont.
