Hi all, I wrote several days ago about my "new to me" YNA. First, today she was playing for the first time since I have had her. Not much, just chewing a big plastic chain toy. But playing none the less.
Today she has presented me with a couple of puzzling behaviors I would like to find answers to so I can better understand her. First, she makes an odd sort of honking noise. Not loud, but it is repetitive. Like a baby begging. With about 2 seconds between each vocalization. She has been doing that to varying degrees since I brought her home 4 days ago. Though today she has added a body movement with it. She brings her wings slightly off of her body and moves them at the same time she makes the honking noise. She does the body movement with the noise when she sees me. But the noise continues even when I am out of sight.
The second one startled me. I was in her room mixing food and putting pellets away in a plastic container. I was doing this sitting on the floor singing to her. She was out on top of her cage...last I looked! Well, I looked behind me to see her casually strolling across the rug coming straight towards me. She showed no signs of "I'm coming for you" in her. Just like she was coming to visit. Well, not knowing what her intent was I stood up and slowly moved out of the way talking to her the whole time. She just continued to go up to the food containers and began nibbling on one, just as easy as you please. As I have very little reliable information about her past or her character I was pleased to see her perhaps seeking me out? Or was she being sly and moving in for a taste of her new mom!

Sounds like she might be begging for your attention. No i don't think she was out to attack you, just coming over to be involved in what your were doing.Amazons respect and need a strong ,confident personality. She's just looking for her place in the new flock and needs you to be a leader, if left up to her own she might get into trouble by making her own rules.

My Amazon loves to walk around the floor & check things out. They are very inquisitive & like to check out their environment. Mr. Precious vibrates his wings while crouching a little bit & makes little sounds. That's his let me out & love me dance. It sounds like she is so happy to be in a loving environment that she is bonding very quickly. And yes, the bowing the head & fluffing up feathers is a request for a head scratch. She will let you know when enough is enough. Precious will refuse to step up sometimes until I scratch his neck to his satisfaction.

Thank you for the answers and help. Well I am quite encouraged to hear your opinions on her behavior. Next time I will invite her inquisitiveness and let her approach me. It is nice to think she is looking to me for the closeness she was perhaps missing so much. And yes, I will do whatever it takes to be the strong leader for her so she feels secure. I look forward to each day with her and learning more.

I do try and discourage amazons walking about on the floor, they can get into too much trouble there. Better they learn to depend on you to carry them around.

OH how sweet. She wants to be with you! Yeah most of the time when a ammie is upset and in a rampage mood the signs are often like they are freaking out at you or like they are eyeing u in the a way a parinoid psyco would. I know it sounds weird but once you see them nervous or scared you can easily identify thier behavior so that you do escalate it. I think she was in a more... Whatcha doing??? kinda mood then followed it with a OOOoooOOoo A snack kinda mood!! lol

Well...all has been going well. UNTIL I did something really stupid this morning. I am more than aware of my boundaries with my YN. However, I overstepped them this morning when I asked her to step up on my arm instead of the perch I have been using. She stepped up, then proceeded to very calmly bite my hand. HARD...I saw stars. But I did not react. I just put her up to her stand and calmly (as I could in excruciating, ongoing pain) asked her to step down. Which she did. Then I left the room quietly and lost it...wow! My hand by my thumb is bruised and swollen. Very painful and very numb. I think she damaged nerves, in the very least... After 5 minutes and I composed myself I went back into her room and just talked to her as though nothing happened. I hope I reacted correctly. I have never been bitten by a bird before...and don't ever want to be again!!!

Yeah learning to "read " your zon can be a painful experience. Were you moving her to some where different? You can practice step up with out removing her from the cage, when she steps up just quickly put her back. The reason she bit you was to say no, because you didn't know the other signs she was giving you. You did good not reacting ,though i know it was tough. Sorry about the bite, it might take her awhile to train you, LOL

That's kinda strange that she was calm about it. If she really has had zero affection or attention maybe she didn't know she was hurting you? Mr. Precious will explore with his beak which includes my toes when in bed. he's very gentle but I say "Ouch" so he knows not to nibble harder. When I tried to clip nails I did receive some very nasty bites, but what you're explaining seems more of an exploration gone awry. Doesn't make your thumb feel better I know. But go back to doing what you knew worked.

I'm getting preened right now as I type! Who needs a hair stylist when you have a bird?
