Our new life!

So after 12 years of having my beloved Nanday conure, I was approached by a friend who had tried to help another friend by adopting Sioux. She thought he would be a great addition to there busy home.
So here I am, now I have him. He is a YNA, I'm told he is 25 yrs old.
I've handled and taken care of many birds for folks including another friends YNA. But he is the first to "own me".
That being said, today is day three. On day one he was super loving and wanted to be pals. Day two was great and not so great. He steps up, when I tried to pet him, he bite the fire out of me! Ok, I got this...
Day three, I give him space and just open his cage and let him explore. After doing his rounds making sure all was secure he climbed to the floor, and I then of course heard one of moms cats bells sliding on the floor in the opposing room. So I slowly moved and offered him to step up. He did, but he also tested my wrist for soft spots...ouch!!!
I'm too trusting, he is so sweet! But I'm here to learn and hopefully save him from being passed around.
I got a wood perch for him to step on for now... Time to train myself to get control over this naughty guy. I'm not for the eating!
His first vet visit on Monday, both birds will get full exams, screened for the works, wing beak and nail trims! I can't wait, my avian vet is Awesome!

Feel free to hit me with all the good and bads. I need to hear it all.

Hey and welcome to the forum. thanks for giving an older amazon a new home. I suggest you read though some of the older threads in this section. Loads of tips and general info about rehoming a zon. IMO zons need confident, outgoing owners who dole out affection in a conservative manner. When dealing with a new zon earn your position of flock leader by giving pets and cuddlies in short sessions. End the interactions with him wanting more of your attentions , not him biting to say "i've had enough". I'll try to keep it short and not write a book. Feel free to join in the forum and post question here. We'd love to help both of you out.

If you have a pair of work gloves or leather gloves, use them!

Today has been great! He is really getting better aquatinted with his new home. His cage is really nice so I don't need to worry there! Oh wait, gotta grab a new wheel. Been reading a lot of the knowledge in the older stuff! So happy to find this community!
I started yesterday with the beginning o his new diet. And he almost ate half a days helping mixed with some juicy mango....My Conure was also on the junk food seed, peanuts diet and took quickly to Harrison's pellets and is happy for it for sure!!!... So here's to a new health plan and his long life!
Earlier I noticed he is really enjoying his new sand perch. Just wish he wasn't sharpening his beak winking at me!!! Ha!
I'm told he has said before " ill bite you". The warning would have been nice! We are giving each other a day or few.. Then we get gloves, and just work slow from there.

Was gonna start looking for some good hornbeam ( Carpinus Carolinia) branches to make him a play stand. The wood is so strong and very hard. The irregular shape of the wood should be good for his feet. I also have them growing like dandelions here! I have a really nice stump that I can mount to a plate and dolly. Then add a few really good size branches. Attaching them mortise and tenon with an internal anchors. I work along side a guy that is a custom sawyer, carpenter, and craftsman.... This is right up his alley! I can't settle for PVC. Just don't want to look at it.
Anything I should do different or consider?

I would bake the wood at a low temperature to dry it out and kill anything that might be living in or on it, but it sounds like it'd be great for a playstand.

Vet report!!!
Had a great visit with Dr. Bolt! He is such a nice and informative Vet.
Sioux was hilarious from the second I woke him up to go.
As I had him step up and pointed him toward the critter Carrier, he began saying "I don't want to go!" Over and over....Obviously he went!

First thing was his nose was a bit stuffed, holy cow he has big nostrils! Using a small loop he cleaned them out! They won't get stuffed like that again!
He was then examined all over and given a lil trim on his beak, nails, and wings!
Oh he is such a pretty bird the doc kept saying!!! This bird is a true show off! He was so good for the doctor! And I'm not sure how but he is potty trained! Gotta drop off a sample tomorrow from him as he waited till he hit his perch when we arrive back home,4 hours later! Can't really complain, he is in great shape!!! On a side note my dear Nanday conure Jojo got a great report also! The two birds have been very quiet since the visit, must be tired from all the fun.

That's good news, glad you found a good AV. Sounds like he has found a home with you. Congrats. Now you'll know how the rest of folks owned by a nape feel, LOL.

It's funny how things can be so different day to day... I have not felt the need for gloves in days. I had them on the chair beside his house. He was caught by me loving the glove. And also likes standing on it rather than the cold floor.
He is getting a bit to excited about my snacks. I love peanut butter captain crunch... Apparently he thinks he should too. My dogs don't get them, he won't either... I'm secretly giving him Harrison pellets instead! 😬 the good new is he warming up to me more and more!
