So Bosley is really getting into being outside.
He loves his main cage rolled out onto the deck, so much fun.

But I am also training him to go out in his carrier, we got out to the deck, out to the back yard, to the pet store and sometimes to the park. This is all going really well and he even goes in his carrier by himself and whines to go out LOL.

The only thing is I have a plastic dog carrier and while it does the job it obscures a lot of his view and sunlight coming in. I was looking at small dog crates, what's everybody think?

I've looked at the bird carriers and I haven't seen anything I really like, he doesn't chew on bars much and he would never be unsupervised in it. Bar spacing is fine too since he's pretty big.

I use one of the small wire dog carriers. I love it. Would you like me to post a pic?

YES Please,

Thanks!!
I am just making sure no one has had any issues with one, but from what I can see they would be perfect.

I am really a fan of crystal flight carriers, but they are pricey:(. Wire dog crates can work just as well to:), just the crystal flight carriers are so easy to clean and manta in.

I saw those but I want something the.sun can get in and that he can also socialize in Like getting a head scratch or accepting a piece of food. I'm not worried about the cleaning part, I can just hose down at end of use.
Also the weight on the crystal ones might make it a little difficult for convenience.
They are really nice though.

I just recently bought a xsmall dog crate for Quincy. I think it works well. I used to use a small bird cage but I found the prerches that fit in it were to flimsy for him and the bards couldn't hold the perches or his weight real well. Where as the dog crate bars are thick and hold the perches great!

I just posted today about having issues with him not wanting to go in it to go to work with me, but after talking to a few people here on the forum, we think it just might be he is tired after a long day spent at my store. So the next day, he doesn't want to step up, because he doesn't want to go to work again because he needs some rest. At first I suspected he might not like the carrier, but he did that even with the bird cage.

When he is in the dog crate, he doesn't seem to mind it. I think it is working out well! I just need to remember to give him a day to rest before taking him out on another outing! :D

To my surprise they are pretty light I have two of them and yes I understand now you'd like something more open:), sounds like you are on the right track!

Ugg, got home to find a note that my cage was borrowed. I will be getting it back in the morning. I have a rope perch in it and two lock crock type dishes. I find small toys that hold up well to keep the parrot happy. There has been some worry about getting there heads stuck under the bottom wire but in the last 2 years all has been well.

Thanks for all the advice, I am going to go look at some in the next few days.
Blanca, Bosley also doesn't like goin out 2 days in a row yet unless its just the yard I am using a lot of short stays in the carrier.

Shelley, sounds like exactly what I'm trying to do. Would love to see pics when you get it back

This might sound crazy but i walk my baby in the pram everyday and i too wanted to take my bird on the walk but thought a carrier would be better than a harness then he can go under the pram!! I like the look of the crystal flight carriers but prefer to buy on from in Australia. Can you get them in Australia? If not let me know what carrier you end up getting as i'd be interested to see what you do. :)

Sandy, if you have a lot of hawks and/or eagles in your area, you might want an outdoor/temp/travel cage that is a bit more substantial, because once one of these birds fixes on a caged bird, the cage needs to be able to withstand a direct hit at speeds of 200Kph +.....

I know of a situation where a hawk flew into & through a screen door, into a condo because it was after a Quaker parrot.....Quaker spotted the incoming hawk, started screaming, spooked the owner who went after the hawk with a broom...inside her house & chased it out.....

Sandy, I personally think a wired dog crate would work. :)

As much as I LOVE the crystal carriers, I would worry about heat accumulating in there.

Or, you can always keep your eyes open for a used cage on CL or so that you could set up for Bosley outside. :)

Well the little dog crate that I have cost $35 and held up to a 6'4" 200lbs teenager running full into it with NO bird inside. Cage was knocked to the ground hard, teen had really bad bruising for 2 weeks. No damage or bending what so ever. The only thing I would not do is leave bird out by its self because a cat or raccoon can easily put a paw in the cage.

Thanks guys,

I am not too worried about the Hawks as I have a tree cover and the Hawks hunt down by the ravine. Also would never leave the birds unattended outside as we have so much wildlife and some stray cats too.(Ravens, coyotes, racoons, bears etc..)

This is to use when I'm gardening in the back yard where I can't bring his big cage and for outings like going to outdoor coffee shops and letting him socialize and get even more attention!!

I have the plastic crate, but I am in the great northwest and for 8 months out of the year we are pretty sun challenged so it be nice to have the wire instead of plastic to get as much UV as possible. Also he loves looking around and the plastic crate obscure a fair amount of view.

I have found a 50% off sale at a local pet store and am searching CL so happy shopping for me!

So I grabbed one today and I really like it, its going to work out well Bosley loved being able to see out. The build quality isn't the greatest, but it works.
