I keep hearing how aloe detox helps with liver function and got to wondering if anyone has used it for kidney issues?

The vet has told me since Zilla is about 28 and has had so many health issues, and with her kidney problems that I should only expect her to live another 10 to 12 years even with the best of care. :(

Does anyone know if it would help her kidneys? I don't think it would hurt to try it, would it?

I will try anything (within reason) to help her outlive me if I can...

Amanda - I don't know if Aloe helps or not but I've been looking into Essential Oils? Have you looked into those? I don't k now how much I'm going to go into it but I might try it with my cats!

I have been researching the essential oils. My Aunt is a dealer for DoTerra Essential oils, so I know how to use them on humans, cats, dogs and horses, but my Aunt doesn't know anything about birds so she is getting me some information and some contacts in her "group" who do have birds and use the oils for them.

I've been a bit afraid to even use them in the same house as Zilla since she does have the air sac issues and I know how sensitive birds respiratory systems are. I don't want to cause more problems!

Aloe will go a long way to helping detox Zilla's liver, absolutely give it to her, liver damage can be reversed.

If it helps the liver clean things up, then the kidney function should improve as an offshoot of that, but I don't know.

I DO KNOW that Pecker's liver values went from off the chart to within normal limits within two months of using the stuff...

And Carolyn was the one who convinced me that this was the way to go. She swears by it.

It's not toxic, in any case, though some folks believe they could become dependent on it if used long term. (i.e. the liver gets used to the boost, and when you stop using it regularly, the bird suddenly digresses...)

For that reason, I would recommend moderation if you intend to use long term. (But if your bird has been diagnosed with fatal liver disease, obviously, cram as much into the bird as you can get the bird to drink, cuz it's probably your last hope, and it has been a miracle cure...) One big bottle will last you many months as a supplement. What I did was mix it with apple juice 50-50, and just let the bird drink her fill.

I'm pretty skeptical about "snake oil" cures. I saw this one work with my own eyes.

If you've got lab results now, use it for two or three months, then get those values re-checked, and that should give you your answer as to whether or not it's working with your bird.

Same basic ingredients as aloe detox (minus the aloe).

Difference being the quantity (and the aloe.) 1 ounce vs. TUB-O-DETOX for the same basic price.

They don't know really, if the active ingredient is the aloe, the milk thistle, or the dandelion root - or some combination of all of the above - however, I suspect all of the above is the right answer.

We don't know why they all gather at the edge of the river in the wild, to eat dirt, either. But they all do, and there is obviously a reason for it.

Fatty liver is a captive bred thing... it's diet related.

I buy and use organic dandelion chopped small to mix in with the softer foods and really stick to them it is great at detoxing both people and parrots. I also frequently use kale and arugula (also superfoods imo).
