Friends for Amazon?

I'm fairly new to parrots, and am wondering if my new Amazon needs a friend, and if so, can it be something like a cockatiel? Ruby was hand fed, and I don't know if she even knows she's a bird lol, she reminds me a lot of Blu from "Rio". She spent most of her life, which is estimated to be 5-7 years near her parents, who were used as breeders. Thats a whole other story but they were very mean and would try to attack her if she got anywhere near them. So would she benefit from a bird friend, or would it just be stressful for her? What are your thought?

How old is she? You have any dog,cats, lots of other people around? Does she go out and about with you? Well socialized? If she was young you might stand a better chance of her getting along with other birds Pet amazons arent well know for liking other birds unless they grew up with a flock. Pans might be an acception to that but napes can be "jealous" and even deadly with other birds. Just my 02 worth ,,BTW i do live with a house full of napes and other zons,, IMO napes are the most anti,social of the zons.

Im not sure how old she is, probably 5-7. We do have quite few other pets and she is often on someone's shoulder-her favorite place to be. She is afraid of just about everything except people, but is getting better about the other critters.

I have 2 other amazon's and 5 cockatiels. I would NOT risk letting my Bingo(yellow nape amazon) interact with any of my other birds.
That does not keep you from having other birds. Every bird has his/her own personality but I would not get another bird just as a companion to your Ruby. If she bonds to you I think it would be dangerous to try.

If you have not yet read the first thread in the Amazon Forum (Amazon Body Language), please do so. It is near a gold standard for understanding and working with your Amazon.

As a group, Amazons 'can' get very accustom to their surroundings and if changes occur it can throw them off. The same is true for new arrivals, regardless of age. I am a big believer in 'The Real Estate Sales Tour' of our home. This process involves visiting nearly everything in each room of the home i.e. This is the Dad's favorite chair and this is the TV, etc, etc, etc... This may seem like a waste of time, but for whatever reason; a chair got moved or this or that got added to a room and they can become upset with a change, even if it is small. Hence, they could show fear! It also provides you or any member of the family time to bond with the Amazon. Remember, Amazons love to hear us talk to them or nearly everyone else. Our Amazon commonly joins in on telephone conversations.

IT IS VERY IMPORTANT to socialize and keep socializing your Amazon. In our home, nearly everyone that comes into our home gets to hold the parrot! One of our member's family have a game called: Pass the Birdie. The more Amazons interact with us humans and far more than just one person, the more open they are to new people and new things.

Sorry, got a little off topic.

Only get another bird because YOU want a second bird, never get one for your current bird to have a buddy. There is never any guarantee they will get along, then you could have a serious problem with 2 jealous birds who need separate interaction time with you. Plus amazons can be quite content as single birds. Really, as long as they receive proper care, lots of interaction and socialization, they will adapt easily to having a human "flock" instead of one of their own kind. Our amazon thrives as a single bird.
