I guess Im feeling a little down today regarding Yoshi, feel like a failure with him. Why? Im going to list them now:

1) This zon just doesnt want to clicker/target train at all. He is not food motivated, and if we are clicker training and I offer him the treat afterwards he attacks my hand than takes the treat. Did I mention he is not food motivated, ive tried every nut there is, even the sunflower seeds...nope!

2)I know Im not supposed to get upset when this happens only because, well, just because their amazons. But it really is a blow, not much physically but more mentally and emotionally when he attacks me out of no where...I mean wth! I watch out for the tell tale sign and nada.

3)My oldest son, who is 4 going to be 5 is high functioning autistic, you cant even tell he's autistic but his speech delay points it out. All he wants to do is just wants to give Yoshi a little head scratch. He's just like me loves every animal there is on the planet, not like my other two, and all he wants to do is have the connection with him. I cant force Yoshi on him or vice versa, but he doesnt understand why Yoshi doesnt want to step up on him or bites him out of no where.

Amazons can be one-person birds. In ten years, my husband's BFA never let me pet or scratch him, though he did permit me to carry him where he wanted to go. That must be difficult for your son...hang in there, he may warm up one day. Our Amazon liked cashews, but what he really wanted was Cheez-its or goldfish crackers. He would do anything for an orange cracker. There must be an irresistible food out there...

Ah I feel for you and can sympathize. Yoshi is still very young and will take time to settle down, think naughty child. My friends RB2 was pretty similar for first couple of years but has settled down a lot. We'd get flying at head attacks etc, that head (mine!) needs killing!!! Playing with him resulted in overload very quickly = bite(s) :(.

Perhaps all Yoshi needs is praise and patience for now? :)

And a Normal Grey Cockatiel named BB who came home with me on 5/20/2016.
after 27 years, I still have not found one particular food that is Amys' favorite .. She is a smart bird, and I know she could learn tricks and stuff, but that ONE food is elusive

If it was Smokey I was going to try and train,cheet-o's and corn curls would probably have done it lol.

As far as Yoshi's attitude, he IS still quite young, and trying to show all who will listen (and WONT!) that he is the Big Cheese in the family. Patients, and time, like every one says.. I do feel for your son though :(

When things like this happen, return to the basics and work forward.

As Jim stated Amazons are smart and it make more sense to just take the treat, right! Viewing this from the Amazon's stand point!!!

With your son, please start with him reading the Body Language Thread at the Top of the Amazon Forum to your Amazon. Sitting along side the cage or a stand.

More later, but this will get you started.

Try training him before his teatime when he's hungary and he will be more motivated make him stretch for the treat so he can't bite

Mamaof3, I can't help you with the clicker training as I have never tried.
Just a little story a possibly a suggestion for your son.
My son has asperger syndrome, which to some is also known as a high functioning autism, He is exceptionally bright, but body language is something he could never grasp, be it human or animal. My IRN Ramsay is a little devil and at times would also lash out and bite.

My son loves my birds. When I had a clutch of lovebirds he was helping me socialize them. This one little bird kept nuzzling into him. I got him a small cage and my son took care of this bird, named him Quagmeyer. He lost interest in Ramsay and him and Quagy were and still are best friends. Eat together, do homework, etc. Just wondering if maybe a little bird of his own may help. If it was a baby and your son was the main caregiver it would probably bond to him. My son was a little older about 6 or seven. He is 20 now and in University. I still have Quagy here and when my son comes home from University for a visit he goes directly to see him.

Thank you, your post put a smile on my face. My son is still a bit young, ill wait and see how it all works out, or if he even has any interest in birds anymore.
