16yrs old and I can only find out history for the last couple of years 4 homes always booted for noise, and people could not get him back in his cage. have not been a problem for us this fella and my wife had an instant bond and he is a joy to have, and take care of.

canes- I am disabled and I use a cane when I'm out in public or I have a scooter well my knee has giving me hell lately so I got a cane out to use around the house, and when Sammy seen me walking towards his cage using it he totally freaked out. he went into flight mode to get away and ended up at the bottom of the cage cowering in the corner shaking. this has never happened before and I have worked around and in his cage with cross perches and sticks, and when I have the shop vac out with the extenstions on it he always sits back and keeps a good eye on me but never what I seen with the cane.

I had always hoped that he had never endured any real abuse but I think that idea just went out the window. with his reaction to the cane made me sad to think about it but I think he has some bad memories of a past keeper who used a cane.

I'm hoping if I leave it sit out a ways from the cage, but within his sight and only use it when I'm walking away from his cage he may get used to seeing me with it and accept it. if not then I just limp a little.

As good hearted people, the want is to assume the best regarding our Parrot's history. That said, it is always best when introducing new things or working with them in general, to assume the worst.

There is no way to know if your Parrot was abused. Or, if your Parrot, for whatever reason, has a distrust for this or that thing. It is very possible that something that has been sitting next to your Parrots cage for a couple of years, is full excepted as okay and then Totally Freaks Out when it get turned 90 degrees. Welcome the the Wonderful World of Parrots!

This is why it is so very important to introduce things with time. It is also why, the Real Estate Agent's Tour of your home at least once a month is so very important.

Some Parrots take any and all changes with little or not effect and others Freak-Out if a new ink pen is added to the coffee table. Its just the way they are. Regardless of whether your Parrot is total accepting of any change or Freaks with the small thing. Always, conduct a Real Estate Agent's Tour.

This is even more important if any of your Parrots are Flyer's! By targeting flight paths, you help the wire them into place, so that if a fright flight occurs, they use those paths.

I am so sorry for poor Sammy! I am sure you may have accidentally triggered some horrible nightmares for him! I agree with your thoughts on reassociating the cane with something much more pleasurable and slowly rebuild new memories. With his trust in you, I am sure this could be pulled off!

Definitely support this, have seen the positive effect on Plum and probably saved him from harming himself because if surprised by something he knows flying routes that he can use to 'safety'.

My money says someone used a stick to bang on the cage when he screamed.

People can suck, unfortunately.
