need your opinion on PUFFS cere and nostril

I was taking pictures of Puff today and noticed he had a scrape(?) on his cere and his right nostril *looks* plugged with blood....what do you think??

how do I unclog it???

A toothpick is too large for his tiny hole, what else can I use that's small, and if I try....won't it push it down further, that's the last thing I want to do!

Fill a syringe up with saline, hold bird upside down and flush each nostril?

Humidity would also help....

Many years ago I had a cockatiel that got a seed stuck UP HIS NOSE. I tried taking his little footie and using the talon nail to pick his nose but it was wedged up in there too good. I have no idea how he got the tiny seed stuck up there. I didn't know anything about sinus flushing back then so in desperation to get the seed out I put my lips over his beak and gently puffed a breath and the seed came flying out.

I know that this is not the best way to handle plugged nostrils but it actually worked. It is allowing enough pressure to dislodge but not any pressure what so ever to put any air into the crop. I have had to use this way only once more on my Noble macaw who got a piece of food stuck up his nostril. I always try using my nail or their talon nail first to work out whats up there but if all fails I will try to "blow" it out by using a gentle breath.

The smallest bird I ever helped was a cockatiel. Lupe's budgies have never had anything up their noses. If you try my method please be really careful about the pressure of the breath.

gosh your brave Rebecca! I can't blow in his mouth, I'd be afraid I'd do it wrong, or worse hurt him somehow, BUT thanks for the tip!!

I would not pick at it. It could still be residual from the mites infestation and will heal? That's what it looks to me. And she doesn't seem in distress otherwise from the picture.

When I want my birds to "clean" their nose, I bring them in the shower and quickly put their head under the shower spray. Makes them sneeze and if something was in the nares, they just blow it out that way.

thanks Echo, he/she has come a long way, I took him off Baytril the other day and started regressing again

heavy breathing, slumping over, but still eating and drinking

so.....I did some research and found out doxycycline is good for nasal infections for birds, which I thought the Baytril would have taken care of.
He's now been on it for 3 days and is back to normal again!
If this doesn't work, I'm going to pull my hair out

Maybe gently wiping it with a q-tip moistened with warm water?

This has been the solution to many things for me and my animals. Simple and safe...just don't poke any eyes out

BTW, Puff is a cutie!

thanks, Parrots!, when I have a shower, I'll take him in with me in a small carrier so he can't fly away and miss the purpose of the shower, then I can take a q-tip and see if anything comes away, good!, now I have a plan, thanks!

thanks, Parrots!, when I have a shower, I'll take him in with me in a small carrier so he can't fly away and miss the purpose of the shower, then I can take a q-tip and see if anything comes away, good!, now I have a plan, thanks!

I prefer doxycycline or any other antibiotic over baytril! I have yet to have a great experience using baytril... granted, I've only used it twice, but still. Not happy with this product.

Hope you are able to clear out Puff's nostrils in a safe manner!
