2 Cockatiels: Budy and ChuChu, and a Parakeet: Binky
Hello everyone,
~ Budy, our male Cockatiel, is an active, talkative, personality filled little guy who has a huge cage, but gets to come out most of the day and play, has a good mate, and little parakeet friend. He has the healthiest blends of foods i know to give him: a mix of pellet and dry greens, oats and graots, gets lots of fresh greens, vegies and fruit snacks, some seed snacks, lots of fresh water, etc. - he gets lots of excersize on the jungle gym and play pen, and attention from my wife (he still bites at me, but is getting better, not lunging or biting as hard - just hormones).

- SO - Budy (and crew) gets his wings cliped after they (all three birds) show they can fly. Usually once every two moths +/- as the feathers grow out.

:yellow1:- what puzzles me is.... Budy grows ONE side (of wing feathers), then the other. Compairison, the other two birds (female cockie and parakeet) grow their wing feathers evenly at the same time.

- Does anyone has a simular experience, or know WHY budy's wings grow indipendantly? He has done this from when we first got him as a scruffy baby. we've had budy about a year now, all three birds are treated like family members with lots of love and socialization.

Thank you guys for any insight.

Nature, in her infinite wisdom, usually has feathers molt and grow back symetrically so the ability to fly is not compromised. That said, there are always exceptions.

I might have misunderstood but are you saying that they get clipped every two or three months because their feathers grow out? Because if that is what you meant, there is something wrong going on and it's more than an asymmetrical moult which could be just an exception to the rule, as HRH said.

If you didn't, sometimes but not always, asymmetrical moults could be caused by polyfolliculitis.

To Clarify,

- They get the wings clipped when they are able to fly regardless of time.

Budy does not seem to grow his wings out at the same time. He grows one set of wing feathers, then the other. This time we noticed his right wing is growing feathers back, but not the left. His mate ChuChu has (in the same time frame since last clipping) grown her feathers enough to fly, as the parakeet has also grown feathers evenly to fly.

What is polyfolliculitis? - i am going to google it, but your take would be appreciated.

Kindly.

Note:
- After looking up polyfolliculitis, i dont think this to be the case. He has no bald patches, doesnt act itchy or uncomfortable (he can be grumpy to me, but cuddly to my wife) and his feathers are otherwise uniform and smooth, no clusters of strange feathers, no clumps etc. His color is good and he lives a rather care free life with alot of freedom, healthy foods, soft music --- maybe even too pampered -lol.

I hope that helps ?

Bat
