My kid got two buggies from petco yesterday. One of the buggie has a straight beak vs normal curvy beak towards her neck. It also has some bump on the edge of the beak. Is that a gene defect or some virus? I do not want to have a sick bird and later the kid will be so sad if sth happens. Here is a pic. Thanks!

The bumps on the beak are leftover spinach. I just clean them. So you think the straight beak is not a healthy sign? My kid insists on keeping the bird even I told her that it might be a gene defect. She said the biggie would be killed if we return to Petco if this is a real gene defect.

Maybe a pic without the spinach?

(Although really I think it's too late to prevent kid-sadness, sounds like she already loves & wants to care for this little birdie. You might need to balance your desire to return birdie, against your possible kid-reputation as a hard-hearted Meanie. )

They are not really pets. They are small People with wings and Opinions. They pay no rent, expect you to come when they call, & like to destroy stuff.

I just updated with two clean pictures. *The beak is curving outward and towards the right. *My kid told me that I can trim it but I am going to find a vet to do it. Two vets near me are all closed due to the epidemic. *There is one vet 1 hour away but he is suggesting I exchange for a new one.* *I also*called Petco today and they just said they are not sure what is wrong. *They are reluctant to do an exchange due to the*virus.* It makes me really worried that they might just kill it. *As long as it is not bird mites or sth contagious for the other bird, I am willing to take the bird even it is gene-related. *It is a lovely creature for my kid. *She even refuses to get a dog.* *Thanks for all the great advices!

That is exactly what I think. I do not want my kid to feel a bird is a commodity. All lives are priceless even they have defects.

Sounds like your kid already knows that, since they don’t want to return the bird. You’ve done well with them.

Yeah, she spends all day researching on the internet. I will try to get the bird to a vet to see if they can trim the beak and check if it is a liver problem or not. But the bird and my kid are extremely happy. Just one more compliant, I should listen to my friend and go to a local breeder not Petco.
