Hey all, Iā€™m trying to get some safe cage material to make a large cage for my cockatiels and parakeets. I know that stainless steel is the best option and I canā€™t use anything galvanized or made with zinc, but when I search for stainless steel mesh at Home Depot, it pulls up this Pet Screen:

Phifer 48 in. x 100 ft. Gray Pet Screen-3004107 at The Home Depot

It says itā€™s made of vinyl coated polyester, but doesnā€™t say anything about stainless steel. Does anyone know if this would be safe for cockatiels??

"This heavy-duty, pet-resistant insect screening is seven times stronger than regular insect screening and has many uses. It is ideal for screen doors and porches where extra strength and protection is desired. It is an excellent choice for high traffic areas where pets come and go."

It is a screen, not something to be used as part of an indoor cage.

You have to use either stainless steel or GAW (galvanized after welding). Yes, GAW can be dangerous due to zinc, but if kept clean and washed with vinegar, it should be relatively safe. Just understand that if you wash it in vinegar to remove zinc, the cage may have a higher chance of rusting.

Nyla might be able to help you, although I don't know what she charges.

I wouldn't used anything galvanized, washing it to make it relatively safe isn't an option. It must be safe. Check out online, you can find stainless steal mesh that zoo's buy.

Unless you are planning to construct/build a cage big enough for you to sleep in, 400 square feet of screen wire is way more than you will need.....also, forget about shopping at HD, Lowes or similar big box stores, they're not going to have any stainless steel screen wire. What you are looking for...at least not until you realize what you will be looking at price wise.

While there are some 40-50 vendors that could provide what you may be interested in...this link has images that will help explain what you are looking for: Custom Wire Cloth - Belleville Wire Cloth Co - Cedar Grove, NJ

To get you started, a 4x4 mesh is a weave with an opening of 1/4" x 1/4", while a 2x2 is a mesh of 2" x 2" (too large for a 'tiel) and a 10x10 is a weave with openings of 1/10" x 1/10".....
