Hi all,
I have been working with my Goffin , Yoshi on recalls.
I am so happy with our progress so far. I am able to stand back from his cage about 4-5 feet and call him . He loves this game !
I can tell he really enjoys doing this ! I get so excited when he comes to me I actually shake , lolol. I have to really concentrate on not letting my arm shake , it's just so rewarding to have him fly over to me :D:D:D. I make the distance further once a week, only by a foot . He will also fly back when I ask him to. But that is harder for him to do because he doesnt want to leave me. Any ideas on how to proceed with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)
I jsut had to share ! :)

That is great to hear! I can hear you are doing a great job and that is shown by him enjoying it so much, so just keep on doing what you are doing and soon you will be able to free flight :p I would suggest you to try and make the distance further next time you are doing a recall training because when I started with Lulu, which was not a long time ago, I started with 7-8 foot and the next recall training I did she flew over to me from 15-17 foot :) Thinking about doing free flight one day or that is my dream hehe.
If you already have tried with a further distance, then just keep on doing what you are doing right now! :)

Sounds like nut enjoys a good bath hehe :) Wish it was the same with Lulu, she just hates to bathe.
I saw for the first time a senegal, actually two senegals, in real life yesterday in a bird store. They were sooooo cuutee! I just wanted to take them home! There came an older couple and bought them and they also bought a big bag of seeds :( I told them about the pellets and that they also should remember to feed them with a lot of veggies, fruits and grains but they seemed to ignore it lol.

I hate when that happens , but what can you do? You just hope somewhere down the road someone else tries to educate them :(

Unfortunately, there is really nothing to do. Maybe they will love the senegals so much that they actually will do a bit research on them and then maybe they will find out how to give them a proper diet.
I really just HATE birdstores. There were also two caiques with bad feathers, two African Greys where one of them was plucked, three B&G macaws and of them has his beak broken I think.. It did not seem to be okay and I could go on.... And NONE of them had fresh fruits and veggies or even pellets. All being fed with seeds and all their cages were dirty! Should've opened all the cages and then run away lol. Maybe they would fly with me home hehe

That is sad. I hate to see animals in that type of situation.

I guess I've never really worked on it. When Rowdy is flying around the room, I just have to hold up my finger and she lands on it. She always has. I've never worked on a word for it or anything. It's very helpful at the vet's when she decides she is going to fly around in circles up near the ceiling instead of be examined.

luvmytoo, are you working towards free flight?

I have interest in it. But I dont know if I want to go "that" far with my training. I really just like training him , it builds a wonderful relationship and it keeps your parrot's world interesting and fun.
Why do you ask ? :)

Yes , I can see that happening , lolol. We havent been to the vet again since he has his flight feathers back , so that should be interesting to say the least. :)

13yr. old male umbrella cockatoo,
we call him Amigo!

7yr. old Goffin cockatoo, she IS Sassy!!
Just curious? I free flight my Amigo but never really "trained" him to come back to me. He comes in when I call but there was never any official training. If your bird is bonded with you, I think you have a real good chance of him coming home, just my observations, not recommending it to anyone.

I know a little about it , but I'm scared to death of losing my Yoshi or any of my birds. I have seen pet parrots free flying , it is beautiful to see and I'm sure to actually be there is awesome , but , I couldnt live with myself if I lost one of my birds to a raptor or something like that. I just couldnt....

I totally understand, it's a chance you take. When Amigo came to us, a friend needed a home for him, (her home was in foreclosure), we knew nothing about what we were getting into, just trying to help a friend. I didn't know we were going to be a forever home but it ends up being that way...a few years down the road, many mishaps later...we are a congealed family! If I lost Amigo, it would be like losing one of my kids!

We decided to free flight him because he needed more than what we were giving him in the house. Even with good food, good toys, good company...he was discontent. He loves to fly! He's a more healthy and a much more happy bird than he was before we set him free. He comes in at least twice a day, to eat and visit, and then again when the sun goes down,,for bed time, he sleeps in his indoor cage. Again, I have to say, I don't recommend this for all birds but it sure works for Amigo.

I understand , its a type of exercise , stimulation that we cant provide them idoors.
It's a threshold I cant bring myself to cross though. I'm glad it works well for Amigo and it sounds like he handles himself well outside.
I see your in Ca. , I would love to be out in that weather all day too :)

Well, I increased his distance to about a0 feet. I just stood there with my arm out but didnt say "Yoshi come" He stayed on his cage for a while just looking at me , then he looked like he was about to fly , but he made some noised instead. I think he was telling me I was a bit further away from him this time , lolol.
I stood my ground , and said "Yoshi come" and he did ! He really looked proud of himself too , lol. It's really alot of fun for me too , lol. Once he got all his petting and kisses and praise , I told him "go fly" and he went right back to his cage !
I almost fell over , I was so happy !! Just cant believe it !

One thing I did find very interesting was this morning when I let them out of their cages , Rosie was looking up at the skylight for a while , then she let out this alarm call she has when something frightens her. By that time Yoshi was looking up too.
There were two hawks really high up circling around. Both birds were frozen in place looking up. That was pretty amazing that they even saw them that high up !
Once my guys were sure the hawks had gone , did they carry on their usual morning activities.

Amigo will let go with his alarm call when ever there is a hawk in his area. The ravens do a really good job of moving the hawk away from their territory. The buzzards freak him out more than the hawks. When they fly over, Amigo will be very quiet and slowly move deeper into the tree and hold very still. They aren't a threat but he doesn't know that, I think because they are way bigger than he is, he's not taking any chances!

I can't blame Amigo for that. Buzzards creep me out, too, when they are watching me. I sometimes wonder if they know something I don't, like I'm about to fall over dead:D I feel like they are at least hoping, thinking well, now, that would be a mighty square meal!

Oh Roxy ,Nonsense ! But I do feel the same about the vultures. We have those turkey vultures around here and those scare me. When I was at a trial upstate somewhere , there were big hawks circling around the area , I wouldnt put it past them to attempt to grab a small dog ! Hence , the alarm call , small dog alert !
The hawks are beautiful the vultures , not so much.
