How much is to get my cockatoo nails clipped at a vet & what is the procedures

My cockatoo's nails are really sharp and whenever he goes on our arms or finger he always leaves a scratch.

We try clipping his nails on our own but he doesn't let us. :white1:

An avian vet should know how much to cut off! The procedures is simple, a towel, a nail clipper and a dremel! Plus the blood stopper just in case. They should know all that when they do it! I do not like how some places will gas them before doing so, don't let them do that!!!

It depends, I don't know your vet in your area. In my area the prices range from $40+ depending on the size of the bird. IF you can find a breeder friend that can help you out that would work out better. I've been doing my own birds on my own cause I don't like most of the vets around here, IF I find one I like, they usually don't stay long....Also provide a concrete perch, it's quite helpful to keep them trimmed and they trim their beaks on the concrete perch as well!!!

My a-vet charges $15-$20 or so for beak trims... never checked out how much it would cost to do nail trims as well, but I can't imagine it would be any more than the beak trims.

Granted, this doesn't include an office visit cost which some vets may include in the price for grooming.

I recently took in my two for wing, nail and beak trims as well as removing the band on my nape (it was starting to irritate her foot) and all said and done was just under $60. It's very inexpensive for the good it does for them. Less than taking a dog in to be groomed.

Different places charge differently, I've taken my amazon twice now, one was 20.00 and one was 27.00 I only got nails done. They should only towel the bird, do not let them use any gas etc.
Both places I went to only used the dremel.

ALL the vets in my area charges $70+ to do my macaw's nails....you guys are lucky getting it done cheap!!! I've been doing them myself ever since my last favorite vet quit....So I'm in search of another vet.....

$70 for nail trims! That's crazy expensive! does that include the price of a office visit or something?

I don't clip nails, I just use a safety pumice perch and Kenji has a cement perch which works for him. I used to clip Rosie's nails myself before that.

It is very easy procedure, we went to vet's this week it was done very quickly and he charged 15$.
