Bella has been in her larger cage for a little over a month now. She does not play with her toys. I just bought a new toy yesterday, let her get use to it and put it in today The last toy she played with was all wood. She chewed it up to the point it had a dangerous splinter so I had to remove it. She is not nervous in or about the cage and it is in the same location her old cage was. I think being in the same location has helped her settle in.

She is still plucking her feathers. Mostly it’s the feathers on her front/chest. She needs to go back to the vet soon for her claws/nails and maybe her beak.

Taking her to the vet is a real problem. I don’t want to do anything to stress her and make the feather issue worse. She needs to go but it puts her in a great deal of stress. It’s a 20 minute drive and she spends the whole time climbing round and round the cage.

We made some changes around the house.

We had to put something on top of the drapes where she likes to sit. She was shredding the top of the curtains and trying to EAT them. Because of the stuff on top of the curtains she does not like to land there anymore. She now spends more time sitting with me.

Installed a tv in my bedroom. Now I spend time in my room with Bella. It’s a lot of fun watching her look around checking out all the new things to look at. I even get to scratch and pet her like I did in the beginning.

She has a new trick. When I try to take her back to her cage instead of pushing my had away or flying away from me she lowers her head and fluffs up her neck feathers and asks me to scratch her.

I have included her vocabulary list. Everything on the list she has said at least once.
Many of the things on the list are of her own construction. We have never told her “you look so girl” .

Just today she came up with a new one that did not make the list.

“Poopie Bingo”

I have been having a difficult time at work recently and my wife said she herd Bella say.

As you can see from the list of things she says she is a much loved parrot.
It would be imbarising if SHE turnd out to be a HE.

Fantastic list, goes to show if you don't want them to repeat it don't say it LOL.

Have you researched Chamomile for it's calming properties re the AV trip?

In what form. tea? the leaves of the plant?

If she does not voluntarily drink/eat it I would need to towel her just to get her to take it.
I will look into it though, thanks for the recommendation.

Congratulations, that is quite a list!

Regarding the plucking; When you visit your CAV consider talking about a 'slight' rounding of the upper Bill. We are doing this with our DYH Amazon and it has reduced his plucking. But, you do need to have an open discussion with your CAV. For us, we had noted that with a sharp point, he was not only plucking the feathers, but scraping the skin and that was causing skin irritation and supporting the plucking. We went from a fully bare area to white /gray dowel feathers to recently some signs of body feathers. We have also been using a CAV supplied Aloe Misting that has helped the skin.

We have found that the slight rounding of the tip needs to be repeated every 60 days. NOTE: The Beak is very sensitive and removing too much can /will result is problems with eating, moving about (climbing), etc... Our CAV takes a photo with each trim and we provide feedback as to the results /reaction.

Our Amazon is a Traveler and loves to ride in the SUV. He has to be placed so that he can see what is going on. He packs on the miles every week and he really likes to travel. It is important to start with short trips. It is also important to not have the only time your Amazon is loaded into travel cage and a ride in the vehicle is for a trip to the Vet's clinic. Our Amazon while start saying NO, when we pull into the Vet's clinic parking lot. So, remember that they are smart and connect events very quickly.

Each of the Amazons' that have blessed our home have had problems with getting use to the cage. By accident, I had not assemblied the cage before one of our Amazon arrived. With her, I ended-up having her be part of the process of putting the cage together, including the placement of everything inside. It ended-up being the smoothest introduction we had every had. Now it is standard practice. I cannot say it will work for you, but if nothing else helps, give it a try.

Best wishes that some of this works for you!

You would not be the first and I am certain you will not be the last to be faced with that likelihood! Regardless s/he will be the same as the day before! They tend not be overly excited 'one way or the other' by the gender base of their name. :D

I was told when I got her that she was 7-8 months. The CAV said "no way" biased on the amount of feather plucking. She looked just terrible when I got her.

My best guess is less than 5 years because I don't think she has gone through puberty yet. When I got her she did not speak many words just sounds. so I do think she was young when I got her almost 1 year ago.

Whatever you are doing Wes..it seems to be working.

I gave up "teaching" Smokey things to say. She said what she wanted to say,and no amount of bribery or treaties was going to help me to teach her anything.
If it was something she liked,it took less than a day for Smokes to come out with it.
Conversations on the phone,in my mom's voice.
Ringing of the phone..Saying things in AMY's voice..Yelling out JAMES! ( my son's name)..I could go on..I tried to teach her our last name..but NOPE...she wanted no part of it..

Are you going to get Bella DNA'd,sometime down the line?

no immediate plans. If another gray comes to my attention it might be necessary.
