As most of you know by now, I will be getting a 1 month old unweaned Sun Conure, and this may seem like a stupid question but it about placement with the bird on his first introduction to the cage.

Should I put the bird at the mid perch right away and let the bird explore from there?

Or put the baby on the floor(with a towel of course) and let the bird explore the cage from floor level and up.

Thoughts?

I find its easier to place the baby on the bottom without the grate and place food and water dishes on the bottom, they seem to wean easier. Plus put food and water dish in the regular spot as well. They will learn! :)

This may seem like a no brainer but please make sure the water dish you put down is shallow enough so baby won't drown if he/she decides to take a bath in it.

We've gone over this one before Spirit :p

Besides she is the only breeder I can find in my area and the only other one that I could find was somewhere in Tampa or Orlando, I don't remember exactly.

P.S. I won't be doing the hand feeding alone anyways, the breeder isn't to far away and she's agreed to supervise for the first week.

Do you have a heating pad for warmth if the bird should get cold.
I know that sounds dumb but such a young bird may need extra heat.
I use to know a breeder that would lay a heating pad down, cover it with a towel and then set a little rubbermaid tub on top of it with the babies in it....it kept them nice and toasty...
I am not a believer in a breeder selling unweaned birds but I wish you the best of luck in your new adventure.....

Wow, my 6+ week olds aren't in a cage yet....I use a clear storage container with holes (vs aquarium) and was using shavings for extra warmth for a few weeks (plus is similar to the nest).

I add perches later as the babies develop, and don't add water until later too. Oh, I found that those shiny LARGE aquarium stones (washed) are great for making sure they can't get in the dish & the bonus is the babies love the color so it makes them very interested in the water dish.

To each their own I suppose :)

According to the breeder she said it would be fine to put the baby into a cage and she been reliable on information so far, so unless she lieing to me and someone says otherwise I got to go with that lol.

Though do believe me, I really have done my research on this stuff

If you have done your research than you should be confident in what you are doing.
Hope all goes well. Here is a photo of a 1 month old sun conure. I do not see how a baby like this could be in a cage.

Well I was going by what the breeder told me on that subject when I asked her but since you all say the baby shouldn't be in a cage I'll get the back up (I have a medium sized aquarium anyways) and do all the needed changes.

And while I do agree that the sale of unweaned baby is wrong, it is to late to turn back from this, for one the bird has been fully paid off and that is non refundable and two I'm afraid of I say I don't want to buy the bird any longer would just lead her to give or sell the bird to a pet store.

I trust my breeder to the extent you can but I do admit I was foolish in buying a weaned bird but I believe it would be better for the bird. I have done as much possible research I could and more on hand feeding and am learning how to make the formula as need be.

Just to clarify this isn't about the money being non-refundable.

You should blog about it! It could be another page to my mini book! haha I did some research on ducks and stuff and I think that if you look up brooding set ups for ducklings and stuff it might give you an idea of what to keep the baby birdie in. also, check for what's called a Repti-Breeze tank. It's a wire mesh cage with a solid floor that can be popped out rather easily, this might help too! that's what I was going to use for baby ducks from the local 4H :)

I was actually thinking about opening a blog when I got the bird to keep people who are interested updated with out me bumbing a new thread every day, I think I'll have to get on that now that someone else has brought it up!

I might drive by my local pet co and see if I can find that in any of their section for a good price.

for sure! I know petsmart has them, and anywhere that has reptiles is bound to know. You can get one off the internet too! they're not too expensive and really easy to assemble

I sure hope you didn't feel like we were ganging up on you....
I am sorry if that is the impression I gave...
Just because I don't agree with the sale of unweaned birds doesn't mean everyone has to agree with me...
As I said, I wish you nothing but the best in this adventure....
And I truly am sorry if I made you feel bad in any way...it was not my intent.

Oh no, in no way do I feel that. I understand completely where you two are coming from and if I could go back, I would and decide on a weaned bird as now I fully understand the risk of unweaned bird as back when I first decided on this specific bird I only knew of the partial dangers.
