Nipping

What do you do when your bird nips you hard. At the minute, Hiccup is entering what I hope is a nippy phase, but I don't want to encourage it. I've tried ignoring her when she does it, but that didn't work. Currently, if she nips me hard, I'll sternly say her name, which gets her to stop. Normally, after she thinks I've forgotten or something, she'll do it again. Again I'll sternly say her name, but this time she's taken off my shoulder and put in her cage or on her play set. If she then starts biting the cage or keeps trying to get back on my shoulder, she's put in the cage for sure this time and I put a blanket up so she can't see me.

Sometimes though, it seems like she does it just so she'll be moved, even though I never stop her scurrying about as long as she stays away from my laptop and I was wondering if anyone had a better method, cause my ears are really starting to hurt and I'm just thankful that she hasn't drawn blood yet

I put my sun conure on her play stand and ignore her. She HATES not being with me and tries like crazy to get back to me. After a few minutes I pick her up again and usually she is better if not she goes back on the stand.

When Forrest gets real bitey with me he goes to cage........then I tell him to be a good boy as I am putting him in his cage. I don't want him to hate his cage but he associates biting with going to cage. 15 to 20 min later he comes out. Usually he is better if not he goes back for a second time, by then he stops biting. Each bird is different so maybe some other ideas can be applied here.

When he bites, you can rotate your arm slightly to throw him a little off balance ....not enough to make him fall but just get off balance. That always works with a firm NO.

Hiccup's normally cuddled up to close to my neck to knock her off balance, but I can try it. Is there any other way besides putting her into the cage and ignoring her though?

I give Guava space when she's bitey and doesn't want to be picked up, cuddled, etc. I wait a bit to try again or until she comes to me. Learn how to read your green cheek's body language and you'll avoid most bites. They'll usually bite more when they're hormonal/molting, so I make sure to respect their space especially during that time of year.

Yes watch the body language. It can tell you a lot.
