Hello guys. When I came home from work, my conure Boomer had dried up blood by his right nare. I don't know how he got it. Could he have scratched it with his nails? I sometimes see him picking or scratching his nares. He appears like his normal self and is eating.

I have a few questions as I am a worry wart...

1. Could he have scratched it? Have you seem this happen to your birds?

2. Since its dry, should I not mess with it?

3. I read online that I can use a betadine solution to clean it and a regular antibiotic cream to prevent infection. Is this wise? I thought I read somewhere that antibiotic ointments are harmful to birds.

4. Any natural soothing remedy I can try? Keep in mind, it's already dry.

I attached a picture. Thanks in advance!!

Here is another picture. It doesn't look big and I did not see blood smears in the cage. Do birds bleed profusely even from a small cut? I'm starting to wonder if its dried up red bell pepper but he's never had one stuck on his nares before.

False alarm! It was a piece of red bell pepper.

Whew. I was fretting hardcore.

Sorry!!!

:headwall:

PS. I would still like to know if betadine and antibiotic ointment is something you would use for your birds? It seems like the obvious answer should be no, but I want to keep in my cabinet if its useful.

Whew! Thats funny! Glad it wasnt anything serious. Im not sure about the betadine or abx ointment, but I would have started with a warm wet q-tip or washcloth and cleaned it to aee how serious the injury was, after that I dont know! Will be interesting to see what others will say! Im sure someone will say you should have never questioned it and rushed him to a board certified 24hr avian vet even if you had to drive 3days to get there! :09:

So true! I was bracing myself for that haha! And good advice on the qtip. I would have saved myself a lot of worrying had I done that.

Thank you all for the responses. I'm sure you all know how it is to prematurely worry when it comes to your birds so I don't feel as silly as I should. :D

Glad it was just some food. Just use the common sense we all have - see what you can do, see what might net vet's advice or service. then call th vet. pritti does that think where he puts his claw in to a nare andn shakes to try to clar it outl. saline washes are not too bad for them if they wll cooperate.''

Lucy's nare flared up awhile ago, it likely could have been from one of her nails when she went to scratch it. She's fine now.

Good to hear it was just food!

We thought the same thing had happened to Gizmo. Luckily for us it was only the red raspberry we had given her that morning. She must have shook it back and forth, because she had 'blood' spattered on both sides of her head. Gave us one heck of a fright!

Try giving your birds black cherry juice to drink! Coming out the other end, it aint so pretty! LOL

For a bleeding wound, you can try corn start, flour, or even cayenne pepper. Cayenne even has anti-inflammatory properties.

For topical antibiotics, use a cream. These are considered safe where-as the others are oil based. That said, I can't see a small amount of oil based antibiotics being harmful, especially if the bird doesn't ingest it. You can always call your a-vet and ask them the best antibiotics to use over the counter for small cuts and wounds!

I've heard about Cayenne pepper, thanks for confirming that! I'll get antibiotic cream too. Also saline solution, good home remedy.

Thanks for all the responses and concern. Glad to know its happened to other people too. I hope the day would never come where it's actually real :(

Aww thank goodness Boomer is ok, I got well worried when I saw this!

I totally understand the panic... about a week after I got Chewie I had the fright of my life - she was looking all bedraggled and shaking like a leaf, and there was 'blood' all in her bath dish. So I rang up the breeder man crying my eyes out. Turned out it was just red dye from one of her toys, as she'd had her first bath and sprayed water everywhere. Lol :) I didn't realise they were meant to look like that after a bath!
