Ziva - Pineapple Green Cheek Conure
Ziva, my pineapple gcc has a strange habit that I have never heard anyone talk about before. So I was wondering if anyone has ever seen anything like this. She likes to hold onto her flight feathers (she is not clipped). She will hold onto some of her flight feathers and groom. She will also climb around her cage a little too while holding them. She looks like she is having a great time while doing it, but she has damaged a few feathers. I had to clip three of them because they must have gotten bent and had broken about half way down. She can still fly, but it takes a little effort. She also likes to hold and scratch her head, it looks like she is giving herself a massage. She puffs up and her eyes close most the way like it feels sooo good. She is a strange little bird that is for sure. And before anyone ask, she had a ton of toys that get rotated often. Toys in her cage, on top and all over. She has a good sized box full of toys, the spoiled brat.

That sounds real cute what she does to her head. I wondering she's trying to remove pin feathers? I'd be slightly concerned about her habit of chewing on her flights especially if she's damaged some already. I've never heard of parrots holding their flights in their talons lol. Maybe just distract her when you catch her doing it.

Would love to see a video of that. ;)

My Conure likes to hold onto his tail feathers and preen from time to time. He will also sometimes do this if you start petting him. This will sometimes result in him rolling onto his back.

Never heard of a bird doing this with their flight feathers though.

I really should get a video camera.

I wouldn't really say she is chewing her flights, just normal preening. I think the damage is coming from them being bent.

Tich does exactly the same thing. He'll tilt his head, give it a good scratch then puff up and close his eyes like he's really enjoying himself. It's so cute to watch. Not sure about the flight feathers though, never heard about it before to be honest.
