Tips for nail filing!

Hey guys! I think Lukahs nails might be slightly overgrown and I thought instead of trimming this time I might try filing them! Will this work? Will the quick recede like in trimming if I file a bit each day? Any other tips?

If they are overgrown they need to be trimmed, then you can file to keep them maintained.

Hey! if anyone could help me out by telling me how many days I should wait between clippings, as I am trimming back his nails and they are overgrown. Basically, how long till the quick recedes enough for me to trim again?

Kellie, I would wait a week. So I gather you snipped off the tips? And you still feel they're too long?

A dremel is a GREAT tool to take care of Lukah's nails.

And yes, you can also use a file and/or emery board to make them a bit duller.

I snipped the very very tips- last time his back nail was overgrown and I took too much off and man was that a stressful and painful mistake! I think more for me than for him because he didn't seem very phased by the blood and my tears! haha

But I just snipped off the very end and yes they are definitely still too long. I put him on the ground last night to check them and his toes would turn sideways and his nail would still be so long his toe still wasn't touching the ground! I snipped them and they're better, but still not quite there and I can tell they are bothering him. Are you sure a week? Won't they grow back within that time? I just feel bad because I think they are uncomfortable and are throwing off his balance.

Would two or three days be alright'?

If they grow BACK within a week, then you may have consider using some different type of perches for him.

Believe it or not, none of my fids ever required a nail trim.

Sure, in 2-3 days you could take off a wee bit more.

While you're waiting I would buy some nail filing perches if you don't already have one . When I bought my budgies their nails were overgrown , so I bought them 2 nail filing perches , it helped a LOT . By the time I had to bring them for their vet appointment for the nails they have gotten signifigantly shorter .

He has a concrete perch that he goes on a couple times a day, but I just moved it today to be in front of his veggie/fruit bowl so that he will hopefully go on it more often! besides that he has a wood perch, dowel swinging perch and rope perch. The concrete perch should file his nails more often. What kind of perches do you guys have?
