Won't keep band on

My baby GCC I think is 12 weeks... And will NOT keep his/her band on... The day I brought him home the guy had to put it back on then. And yesterday morning the little twit got it off again.

It does not need to be on right? I put it in my jewelry box for safe keeping.

Re: Won't keep band on

The leg band should NOT just be coming off like this. That would mean the breeder put on the wrong size band.

Please do keep it off - to prevent possible injury.

No, it doesn't have to be on but it is helpful if your bird ever escapes. It might help get him home, as well as prove he is yours. I love Sammy but if you put him in a pile of Quakers I couldn't pick him out. A band would be nice for that! But if its coming off it is a hazard.

From my Knowledge...no...it's for identification purposes for breeders. Then Again,
some states have laws in tracking certain species of parrots and require banding.

Though I really think it's just an option, Least that's what I know.

So if the breeder put the wrong size on is there any way to rectify that? I agree if he ever got lost it would be helpful. Although that should NEVER be a possibility.

There is nothing the breeder can do now, no. She either is inexperienced and bought the wrong sized bands to begin with, or she waited too long to band your bird, and the one designated didn't slip over the foot any longer, so therefore she grabbed the next size, one that would go over the foot.

I don't know the rules/regulation for your state, but I'm sure if you Google it, you'll find out whether MD mandates that a parrot be equipped with some form of ID (whether via band and/or microchip).

Re: Won't keep band on

I googled and found nothing regarding Maryland state regulations or laws involving pet birds.
Maybe I'm not searching the right phrase?

Hmm....I was actually having a really hard time finding any info as well.

Here are some links (I didn't look through them thoroughly, and apologize for that).

Re: Won't keep band on

I personally despise leg bands. One of my bird lost her foot because of leg band. So I get mine removed.

Re: Won't keep band on

Neither of those even mention bands...
I had to reschedule my vet due to us getting snow tomorrow but I suppose I can wait and ask him.
