GCC - closing one eye?

Hi all,

We've had our GCC (Elmo) coming up to about 4 weeks now and loving every minute of it.
I have just noticed yesterday that Elmo has started to close her right eye slightly, not all the time but occassionally.. more so when she is chewing on something. Other than that she seems just as lively and mischievous as ever.

Is this normal behavior or should I start to become more concerned than I already am?

Thanks in Advance

Re: GCC - closing one eye?

Del, Elmo could have a seed husk stuck under the lid or has scratched her eye on something. If the eye gets red or there is a discharge it would be a good idea for your Vet to take a look. Could also be some other infection. Wipe her eye with a cotton wool swab dipped in warm water.

Re: GCC - closing one eye?

Thanks for the reply, her lid looks fine and her eyes are nice and bright/glossy as ever and no discharge but I'll have another closer look when I get home to her. If it persists tomorrow then I'll take her to the Avian Vet anyway.

Re: GCC - closing one eye?

We took Elmo to the vet today as she didnt seem herself this morining, he couldnt find anything wrong with her eye after close inspection and some eye drops. Although he thought it might be due to a slight Vitamin A deficiency.
She seems to perk up a little when we got back but now (5hours later) she's really quiet and her eye is closed 90% of the time now... we're really concerned now and trying to get back to the vets as soon as possible.

Re: GCC - closing one eye?

Del, we had this exact behaviour from our GCC about 2 weeks ago. Took him to the Avian Vet, nothing wrong, clean bill of health. Call me crazy but I think it was a change in food. I tried to slowly (apparently not slowly enough because he lost some weight) change Frankie from seed mix to pellets and he did the eye thing for about 3 days. As soon as I added more of the original seed mix he has been fine. Other times I think he was just doing it for attention, lol.

If it was just the eye thing I'd be a bit less worried, but her behavior has completely changed today, she's jumpy and very quiet, normally she's a mischievous little thing running around trying to play with everything but not today, she just sits on one of our shoulders all fluffed up. We put her to bed normal time (UK here) and she usually goes to sleep after she's had a nibble of food, but tonight she looks like she cant sleep and it still awake in her cage. We have an appointment with the vet again tomorrow, fingers crossed she improves or they at least can find what's wrong with her.

Re: GCC - closing one eye?

Oh dear Del seems she is ill. The closing of the eyes & all fluffed is classic of a sick bird. Please keep her warm, see if you can encourage her to eat something & keep her hydrated. She could have a bacterial infection & will most likely need antibiotics.
