Heyaaaaa

So i went wood chopping and got some brilliant tree branches, kinda remind me of manzinta, so got 2 of them, they bend around a bit and have forks.. Then just going to have other branches screwed joining bits together!

Question:

How do you make the tree stand up?

Just like manzinita or java trees, they are on a base, but is it just a super long screw that is screwed into it? Or is it cement or something in the bases?

Or is there an easier way to do it without a base?

Like do you put 2 wood pieces going criss cross as a little stand base thing, then screw the tree into that?

I have literally no idea any type of building.. But i just dont know how to get it to stand up..

Unless there were 4 trees, all in a corner, then connected them with perches in between, so the tree branches are the stands.. But thats too much effort :p

So is it a super thick long screw that makes the java and manzanita trees stand? :20:

What do you guys do to make the trees stand up?

I've never done that, Tab, but I'd imagine you could either bolt a bit of 2" pipe onto your base and stand the tree in that (makes it easy to replace when the time comes), or, you could use right-angled brackets to bolt to the tree and also the base to hold it upright. Two should do it, or four to be certain. (Depending on the width of your tree, of course).

Another thought just occurred to me. You know those jobbies designed to stand your beach umbrella in? They're weighted with sand or water or whatever and have a cylindrical hole for supporting an umbrella. Maybe one of those could work for you? Harvey Normans or Domayne or someone like that should have them.

IF you start the base you can make a 2.5'x6' base or bigger if you want, as long as it can move in and out of your room so the door opening matters. Depending on the thickness of your branches, you can measure 2' in from each side then center from front to back. Then drill holes into your base all the way through, your marking you've made earlier. Make sure it's centered of your branch so make sure when you had the branches up, use pencil to mark it, basically draw around the branches onto the base. Then drill center of the circle. Do that on both ends. You can cover the base with linoleum if you want, makes cleaning a breeze. You can make borders around the base first then cut linoleum to size, then glue it down. After it's dried, flip the base and make incision through the holes you've made earlier. You can attach roller wheels on all four sides of the base so make sure when you choose the base sheet, make sure it's thick enough so the screws from the wheels isn't going to poke through. Put the wheels on and then drill holes in the center of your base branches, then use a bolt screw, with the sharp screw tip, not the flat tip bolts! Use flat washers on either side of the base then bolt the base to the branch on both ends. Then on the top you can bolt another branch goes across the top of both base branches, so make sure you have the base branches cut to size to the height you wanted. Then attach them together. They do sell stainless steel bolts! Then viola you have your own bird stand. You can drill holes on either side of the top branches so you can put those bowl attachments on it. I hope I have explained it clear enough.... :)

How would you bolt the pipe on? :O

The trees arent that thick, i will measure them later, i would say roughlyyyyyyy 10cm ?

Pretty heavy though! But i did carry them up a big hill on my shoulders, felt like a real lumberjack HAHA

So 4 angle brackets would hold them most likely? :p

Just had no idea how those super tall manzanita trees stand up with just that one skinny branch :S
Thank you!!! :)

Although he will ask why Fargo needs anymore stuff ! hahaha

Thank you so much :)

Will take a picture of the trees later :D

Manzanita branches are super tough! 10cm is close to 4 inches which makes the branches pretty thick. What exactly are you trying to build Tab?? I'm sure your smart enough to figure it out with all those stuffs you've already built for Fargo, I have no doubt in my mind you'll make something happen. :)

As silly as it sounds, I've made a few "bird trees" using old office chair bases. They're quite stable- I remove the castor wheels and replace with a rubber foot (used as door stops, and as feet for electrical things like amplifiers). I've only used dowel for the main upright "trunk" though. Needless to say, I remove the chair bit as well:)

Oh really, i guess they are big branches, not when you compare them to huge tree trunks though ;)

What am i trying to build? HAHA Well, under his net, is an empty spot...
Theres about 2 meters of room lengthwise, and probably a bit over 2 meters in height, so i wanted to build something like a manzanita stand, but like a double? With the branches connecting.. Hence i got 2 big tree stand pieces :)

But i have never had to actually make something stand up before, most things are connected onto the roof and wall, nothing stands by itself, thats why i was stumped! hahaha

Mike thats actually a clever idea! Although i dont think we have any old office chairs, might have a little pink one somewhere ;)

So i will show dad the branches, and ask for a big bolt screw thingy, and he should know! hahahahha

for my tree for cooper, i have a giant bolt going through an inch and a half of plywood(he cant reach it :)) and about 2 inches into the tree. then i have 4 SS L-brackets spaced around the base of the tree with 3/4 inch screws. that makes it VERY sturdy. i fell onto it putting a seperate branch on top, and it didnt break off the table(but a few branches came off the main tree :( )

Ok!! Thank you :D

I think i will be able to do it now... Just lots of bolts and screws hahaha

Heres my little collection of branches:

and then the 2 main ones i need to stand up!

Leaning on the trampoline, look better when they are standing up straight ;)

But yes, so want to have them as the main 2, then branches in between, and toys hanging on it :)

Just did a big order last night for lots of blocks and toy pieces! :D

Will just buy a coconut and use the halves as little bowls on it :)

You know when you have these great ideas in your head, and think ok this is going to be brilliant.. Then it turns out nothing like you wanted it to be ;)

Oh my god! Check this out :D :D

So i said to dad, i need to make those branches stick up :p Does you have a super thick long bolt thingy? and he got me 2, and then got me the base.. and said, screw a big hole in the base for each tree, then do a little hole in the tree.. And then go into the toolkit, and get a head thing that fits the bolt, and attach it to the screwy thing ( yes im great with tool names) !

So did all that.. Sawed the tree bases at the correct angle for where i wanted it to lean and stand..

Drilled it all!

Dad came up to the house and held the trees at the right angle on the floor, and i screwed it in!

And it all stood up perfectly :D :D

How brilliant!!!

Now i will screw some horizontal perches onto it in 2 or 3 different places across them!

Get some vet wrap tomorrow and put it in different sections, get the coconuts and put in hooks for toys!

Thank you all!!! :)

Are you people on the forum awesome or what! haha

Will get pictures when its all completely set up and colourful in a few days :) Hopefully my toy package arrives in the mail on friday!

Do you think i should use the same kind of branches for the horizontal perches, or a different type with rough bark?!?!?!

Tab, you are a Renaissance Woman! Well done - I'm so proud of you! I don't think I'd bother with horizontal perches - what you have is perfectly natural and really lends itself to have toys hanging off at odd angles. Whatever you decide, I bet Fargo will love it! :D

HAHAHA Thank you :D

It turned out so much better than i expected, so now tomorrow i will have to move my room around a little..

Cause i was just going to have this little tree stand under the net where the empty space is.

But now its wayyyyyyy too big and tall  so i will have to move the net somewhere else, or tie it higher or something! :)

Will give it another clean tomorrow and bring it inside and see how Fargo likes it :)

I did cut a few more branches, and have just placed it on there, havent screwed anything in yet!
The sun is gone so it doesnt make it look cool with lighting haha

Its great how having a bird can make you so good at building and designing :O

Mum has a VERY good point! You could make LOTS of money making those, NO kidding!!! :D

Shipping would be buyer's responsibility, and you wouldn't have to have it attached to the base when you ship it. Just make sure everything is pre-drilled, so all the buyer would have to do is assemble it at the base ;)

You could even take it a step further and attach some wheels to the base so it can be rolled around. :D

Please take pics as you introduce this to Fargo. I foresee one VERY excited Fargo. :32:
