I had this old (though in great condition) small rope perch laying around forever that I was going to get rid of because it wasn't being used. I had been hanging large wood "link" toys across the top of his cage, but he kept getting on top of them and chewing them out from under his feet, which was a safety hazard. In regards to chewing what he's perching on out from under his feet, Kiwi isn't the brightest bulb:54: It's why he doesn't have wood perches at all anymore and apparently XL wood toys are a no-go too. I got to thinking perhaps if I could hang the little rope perch across the top of the cage where I'd been putting the big wood toys he'd have a secure place to perch (that he won't chew, he doesn't bother rope perches) and then hang some little toys around it for him to play with I think it came out really well, is an easy DIY project and I'm betting I'm not the only person with unused rope perches lurking around. Heres how I made it:
1. Drill a hole in the end caps of the rope perch. Put one of those big screw with a "loop" on top through the hole and use a nut to secure inside (USE STAINLESS HARDWARE!):
2. Screw the end caps on so screw slides into the groove the bar would go. If you have a mechanically-inclined bird who might unscrew the caps, run a little glue on the threads INSIDE (completely out of reach) to secure the cap permanently to the perch:
(This is partially screwed down, screw down as far as possible with the nut. There will be a small gap from the nut taking up room inside)
3: Hang in the cage. You could use (stainless) quick links and chain or do as did and use large plastic links like these from petsmart- Grreat Choice® Loveable Links Bird Toy | Toys | PetSmart
(Had just finished cleaning his cage, thus the total lack of toys, trust me, it fills up fast
